AT&T vs Cricket

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
My wife and I have been long time AT&T users. A few months ago she upgraded to an iphone with internet and all that. I still love my "dumb" phone with no features. I saw our new phone bill the other day and was surprised by the new cost of the iphone plan. Our two phones together were $170. She doesn't even use the internet on the phone much. She plays a lot of games with her sisters on it, but that's about it.
I saw that crickets phone prices seem a lot cheaper, but I'm not sure if they compare apples to apples or not with AT&T. I noticed that internet with Cricket is 3G for 2.5 gigs then it gets slower I guess. I'm not sure how much 4g she can download now with AT&T.
So for like $55 she can get the cricket plan and i could also pick up a cheap plan, but is the service as good? What are your thoughts on Cricket? Whats the catch? Can she use her ATT iphone with Cricket or are we buying new phones?
Thanks for the input.

Not sure how it is now, but I had a company phone through cricket about 5 years ago. It only worked in most of Utah Valley and some of Salt Lake Valley. So I had t mobile for my everyday phone. Still with t mobile and we use our iphones on it. I had to get a cricket phone when I was with them. It couldn't all changed by now though.

AT&T is the only service that works out where I do. I upgraded to a Motorola Atrix, but didn't get the 2GB data plan, I'm stuck in the stone age of 200MB. I don't know how well Cricket's coverage is, but that might be a deal killer.

I went through a local Radio Shack when I upgraded my phone and they were nice enough to allow me to stay on the 200MB data plan. I also don't have unlimited text. It IS nice to have the smartphone features when I need them. Otherwise, I just play games offline. Damn Angry Birds...

I find AT&T's service pretty spotty. At my house I typically get between 0 and 3 bars, kinda random, lots of dropped and missed calls. I'm just waiting for my 2 year agreement to run out in a couple months then I'll be jumping ship to another provider. I'm thinking T-Mobile, mainly because I compared a friends T-mobile to mine in my basement (I work from home, my home office is in my basement) and while I was sitting at 1-2 bars they had full signal strength. I know, pretty anecdotal and may not be typical for the entire area, but service where you live has to be top priority.

I could be completely wrong, but my impression of cricket is it's a low quality service for people that can't or don't want to pay what the major providers charge.

I'm starting to hate cells more now then before! My basement is also real bad for phone calls. I often find myself running up the stairs and outside to get better service. It's worse when Carl calls. Maybe I should just avoid his calls.

Anyways, I got the bill from AT&T today. Normally I don't look at it, but today I did. Turns out I have been subscribing to a Gossip text thing for months. It was being charged to my phone, not even my wifes phone! I got that canceled then looked at my 5330 rollover minutes. Those are about a joke! I told the lady to stop billing me until I had used them all up. She didn't go for that. I can't drop to a lower plan because the unlimited mobile to mobile is not offered in the lower plan. So I'm stuck where I'm at unless you know of a better company to go with.

Here is what I'm paying:

My phone with 700 family minutes: $60
Adding my wifes smart phone: $10
Unlimited text and mobile to mobile: $30
3gb Data plan for her smartphone: $30
Lots and lots of taxes: $25 on a side note I found it od that my phone had more expensive taxes then my wifes.

What are your priced for similar plans?

I have 5 iphones on my account, so my bill ends up north of $300 a month...and that includes a ~25% corporate discount. Cricket is a joke...so is Verizon at my house. At&t and TMobile both get good service at my house.

I haven't looked at my AT&T bill in months, but it is never more than I expect. If Verizon worked where I NEED cell coverage, I'd be on Verizon with my wife and daughter. And chances are, I'd be paying MORE to add my line than I pay at AT&T. Since I don't have unlimited anything, I bounce on 700-1400 minute plans as needed. I think I am going to add my iPad to my wife's Verizon coverage. SUPPOSEDLY, just $10/month...

I found it odd that there are around 10 different charges and taxes added to each line. Most of the charges were the same dollar amount for each line, then one of them was like $.57 for her line and $4.xx for mine. Even if it was a percentage, it didn't add up.

So it looks like it doesn't really matter what carrier you use. The prices are very close and not worth breaking a contract over unless switching to Cricket, which is not getting great reviews by you guys.

We had AT&T for a few years. We noticed one month that they over charged us. We called and they said they were sorry about it and they put the difference on our account, but would not refund the
money. We looked back and they had over charged us different amounts every month for the past year. They would not credit us or refund the money. For the next 8 months while we waited for our contract to expire they over charged us every single month. We had to call each month and then they would put it on our account in the form of extra minutes, but not give us money. We talked to every manager/ big wig we could get ahold of with no avail. Finally our contract expired and we went to verizon. I have never had a single mistake on my verizon bill. Not one!

AT&T did have good coverage, but not as good as my verizon phone.

I won't use AT&T again.

here is mine. i'm through tmobile, and have been with them since 2005. i've had some sh$&ty phones, but tmobile has always come through with either upgrading my phone for really really cheap, or gave me a new version of my phone. but here is my plan that i just changed to and so far its been awesome.
its called the unlimited value talk and text. $79.98 that includes all minutes, all texts unlimited. then i have the protection for phones @ $7.99, and add 10.00 for internet up to 2gb(then throttled down after 2gb). now with my wife on the same plan all they are doing is charging me $10.00 for her internet. cause she is included in the text and calls for unlimited. and also i have handset protection for her too, which is another $7.99. taxes are about 15.00.... so after all that i'm paying::: 130.00 a month with the handset protection, which i'm really thinking about getting rid of... just my .02 cents.
also my brother that lives in bountiful has cricket and loves it. never has a problem with his calls, internet... not so good.

My wife has an iphone but doesn't use the internet enough to really justify it. She has a 3gb plan, but only used 500mb last month. Stupid thing is that att next lowest plan is 250mb. I'll look more into the tmobile. That sounds like a good plan.

even though i have 2gb of data, i think i have used between 2 of us, like maybe 500mb. we use wifi ALL the time. work, church, parents(3) houses. and tmobile has some good phones too. like the samsung 3. last i heard they had a buy 1 samsung get the 2nd for free. don't quote me on that. and if you do go to tmobile tell them my name and number and we'll get a discount. and also they have a lot of corporate discounts if that is any help.. pm me if you actually do switch to tmobile. and ill give you my name and number.

I've been looking into "unlocking" my AT&T phones to use elsewhere. Seems a bit dodgy to me. Does anyone know of a good way to do this, that either wont reset to AT&T down the road, or wont cause me issues down the road? I'd prefer someone local to do this for me. I don't really want to follow instructions off of You tube.
