good stuff man. where did you get your pump and motor at?

I must admit that I lucked out- I looked everywhere for a cheap pump. I told my Dad what I was doing and he said " I think I have one of those in my storage shed." I love my Dad - he has some great junk. (Treasures)

Ebay or NPS maybe? I actually saw a snowplow at Pick-nPull with a good pump and reservoir, but I no longer needed it. I wonder if a Mercruiser trim tilt motor would work?? Sorry I'm not much help here, am I? If I happen to spot another one I will let you know. I've been told that Cal Ranch has some good prices on hydraulic stuff for tractors. You could rig a pulley to a swamp cooler motor to run one of those. Whatever you do, post some pics!

Would a power steering pump put out enough 'juice' ??

I put together a rough example of the parts needed and pricing.

Here is a pump that will work for $89. Item #10563 3000 PSI runs off pulley.

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/...HOTOS=on&TEST=Y&productId=473655&categoryId=0

Detent valve $64.99

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/...HOTOS=on&TEST=Y&productId=472&categoryId=1503

Hoses -

2 - Item # 50148 1/2 inch 4000 PSI $10.49 ea.
2 - Item # 50248 3/4 inch 2500 PSI $16.29 ea.
1 - Item # 50212 3/4 inch (res to pump) $8.49
An electric motor, belt, and pulley could be scrounged up pretty easily. A little fabrication to build a reservoir tank or modifying a small tank with 3/4 NPT inlet and outlet should be easy enough.
I don't run a gauge or a filter on mine, but it could be added later if you wanted to.

Looks to me like it is doable for about $240 or so.

Add a Prince cylinder- Item #909124 for $119.99 It has a 2.5" bore and a 24" stroke. ( Mine has a 2.5" bore and a 20" stroke- It will almost bend a 90 degree in one shot, but not quite. I have to repin once and give it a bit more. This 24 " should give over 90 degree in one shot easily.)
NPS has cylinders all the time, but they are often the wrong size, damaged, and usually overpriced. Except on half price day, they are just wrong size and damaged!

Yeah, I would think 3/4 hp would be plenty. You want to set up your belt and pulleys to get the pump at the RPM you want. You could use a motor that runs at 3600 and then "gear it down" by using a driven pulley that is about twice the size of your motor pulley to turn the pump at 1800. The spec on that pump says 1 GPM @ 1800 which is prob more than enough to run a single cylinder.

HP = PSI x GPM x 0.000583

2500 x 1 x .000583 = 1.45 HP

I am no engineer, but I think that by using the pulleys the 3/4 Hp 3600 motor would work, but finding a 2 HP motor would be better.

If you look closely at the pics of mine the motor is very similiar to a starter motor. I wouldn't think it makes much HP at all. It does not spin very fast either, by the sound of it. It will bend 2" DOM like nothing. It probably takes about 10-15 seconds to make a full stroke. Any faster and I think I would just be making more scrap than I already do.

This is cool. I'm thinking you could run the tube bender and a hydo press off of the same pump, just add it into the line.

Good idea.

Would you run a 'Y' valve & just open up the one you're using at the moment?

You could- but you would probably want to size the pump and motor a little bigger for that. The mechanical leverage of the arm on the bender is what makes it poss for such a low HP to work so good.

I am dreaming of my bender... I have a HF and you guys whine about wanting hydro.... That looks WAY to easy LOL But I guess if you are building way to much stuff those extra seconds make a diffence.

I was surprised at how little effort it takes to strong arm that stuff around. Perhaps I woundn't even need the hydrolics. However, it seems to still be several hunderd dollars for the bender and dies. What sizes would be the best?
Certainly one 2" and one 1.75", but what radii?

The rule of thumb is that you don't want your Radius less than 3x the size of the tube you're bending. Otherwise, the chance of kinking the tube greatly increases.

So, if you're working with 1.75" Tube... 1.75 x 3 = 5.25. You'd be safe with a 5.5" radius, using 1.75" tube.

Hope that helps!

WOW! I don't wanna mess with you!

When I was bending on the floor stand manually it took two of us with great effort on the end of a six foot extension pipe to bend up the 2" DOM. The smaller stuff is alot easier. The biggest advantage to the hydraulics is accuracy. It's pretty tough to figure out the spring back when you are at the end of the handle yanking your guts out. Besides I am too old and lazy to muscle it around anymore.

Whoo's whining? we are acting. cool tools are at the top in my book.
