Howdy I have a idea for a lifetime trunnion bushing for the Toyota steering knuckle.

This is taken from what Dodge and International did back in the day, instead of a upper bearing, they used a taperd bushing made of Brass,

Seems to hold up pretty good went thru a 1966 3/4 ton Dodge and the thing was in great shape,

Give the National Bronze and bushing guys the specs of the bearing and have the brew them up,

Would any body be interested in that I wonder ???

Frank, trunnion elimation kits are already on the market.

Realistically bearings failures are quite rare when using a quality bearing, proper installation and keeping your knuckle studs in place. Shear knuckle studs, break a birf, or use a crappy no name bearing and your far more likely to need a different solution. I'd guess that 100x more people experience birf failure than trunnion bearing failure... of course break a birf, drive on it for even a short distance and you've likely caused damage to your trunnion bearing. That said with birfs getting stronger and stronger other parts of the knuckle need to be build to follow suit.

the very first knuckles, and on up to '69 at least w/M715's, used bronze bushings with a spiral groove in them for... lube to get around. They held up alright to the stock power levels and tire sizes I guess. I've got a couple in the basement...

If we're going to return to 50's technology, sweet. If not, I'll keep my bearings.. in my appropriately-sized Dana 60. And I'm not expecting trouble in my equally appropriate FJ40 axle either.

eliminator kit

I am aware of the trunnion kits available, those are a complete change over kit, cost around 200 bucks

This tapered bushing, rides in the same bearing race as the tapered bearing, everything else stays exactly the same,

And since the use of #2 thick grease seems to be the route most take the life expectancy of the upper bearing is shortened , unless maintained every few years, so this would be a definite upgrade,

As far as 1950 technology, heck go back 20 more years, when this axle was invented, Then they knew the advantages of the proper lubrication,
Now this driven steering axle from yester year that has the potential to be practically maintance free is well you know turned into the same piece of crap everyone else uses,

If you aren't maintaining your steering components "every few years", well, what can I say about that?

Why don't you get to work on a hand crank-nut retrofit for newer engines, after all, those tricky electronics wear out and honestly, do you really need them? It's a scam from the OEM's and their suppliers to generate dependency.

Solutions, Frank. Solutions!!

is this really happening?
