It sounds like these lockers are pretty sweet for only around 200$. I read the review on pirate and they really liked them. Has anyone ran them or heard any more about them? Do you think they would be good for a locker in the front, since they are "limited slip"? In a daily driver would they interfere with the steering or should i go for a lunchbox limited slip?

I dont think the aussie lockers are "limited slip." I have one in the rear, and i've abused it. I have a friend with them front and rear, and he abuses them more than i do. If you unlock hubs in the front, then they won't interfere with any daily driving. If you are full time 4wd, then i'd recomend not putting one in the front.

I've ran an Aussie in my daily driver (Dana30) for about 16 months now. In 2wd I can't tell it's there. In 4wd it works great. I would recommend the Aussie for sure.

ok it sounds like i have all my slang mixed up. I have a yj with 33's and soon to have a 8.8 in the back with a detroit. It is a daily driver and I'm just trying to find a locker for the front dana 30 without dropping a huge chunk on a arb. I dont abuse it very bad i just want it to be more capable.

Aussie Locker is a lunchbox "Locker", not a limited slip.

What is the main use of your 4x4?

So are you saying if i put one in the rear i can save money instead of buying a detroit? How much performance are we talking between the two. I have heard the aussie is easier on your tire wear.

I don't know much about the detroits, so I'll let someone else talk about that comparison. For me, if I was building another set of D44's, I'd put in a new aussie, and spend the extra money somewhere else.

Tire wear will be about the same. Detroit will be more money for the locker and you will have to pay to get it installed since it is a full carrier locker and it is louder and doesn't ratchet as smooth. The Aussie is cheaper and you can install yourself but weaker and you will have pins and springs to replace down the road after they wear out. Also if you break an axle it likes to break the pins most of the time. 3 out of 4 I witnessed needed new pins after a cv or axle broke. Both give you the same traction.

 I dont think i would break the axles on the 8.8 but the 30's worry me!

You can also just throw one of these in the back.

You should have the same gears in the front and would just need to relocate the perches and change the end of the drive shaft to Toyota style but don't know if they make a 6 lug for the d30 but they do for the d44 for the front for a future upgrade.

I've got an Aussie in the front(I think, might be the rear...) of my 88 toy crawler. I love it, no problems so far.

Aussie's are nice b/c they unload under lighter loads when compared to a detroit, and IIRC from reading they are a little quieter. They are really easy to install too!

So it sounds like i could get two aussies front and rear for the same price as the detroit for just the rear. Does any one see any problems with this? Thanks for the help.

I have a powertrax rear and a lockrite front both lunchbox lockers. They work great for me. The only upgrade I would make is a arb in the rear for the smoother street ride. Great off road, on the street I cant even feel the lockrite in the front, but on corners you can tell the powertrax is there in the rear

I won't tell you 'no'. It's a great and cheap way to get lockers front and rear. They have their quirks, but I think the benefits mostly outweighs them.

You are limited to the strength of the stock carrier by using lunchbox lockers. I'm not saying that stock carriers fail often, but just keep that in mind.

Also, with the use of larger tires the lunch box lockers will likely wear out after 3 - 5 years. I've worn a EZ locker out to the point that it wouldn't engage either side at all. Not really a big deal because after that amount of time, you've got your money's worth.

What "Quirks" are we talking about?

Ratcheting noise and bind on sharp turns, popping & unloading (mostly when in 4wd), hard to drive on icy roads. But they are so easy to install, you could just remove them for winter driving.

How long have the detroits been lasting? If they last 15 years than they are worth it? or i could get a new aussie every 3 years. Hmmmmm thanks for the help guys!

My current Detroit is going on about 6 or 7 years now.

What axles are you putting these lockers into?
