Auto-Darkening Helmets...

So, my trusty helmet is starting to become not so trusty. Its just a basic Jackson big window flip hood I bought off ebay several years ago. What are your thoughts on auto darkening helmets? What brands have you tried and did you like them? Of the ones I have tried I loved the SpeedGlas helmet, so I have been looking at getting a 9000V...I was just wondering if anyone has anything good or bad to say about their experiences...thanks:D

I have the Speedglass 9000x. It's the same as the 9000v, but with a bigger viewing area. I love it. During use I like it better than any other auto-dark I've tried on. Just don't forget to turn it on before you use it. The one Carl has you never have to turn on. With the Speedglass you have to remember to turn it on before you start using it. It turns itself off after like an hour or so. Great mask though.

yeah, its supposed to auot turn off after 30 min..so in your opinion is the larger viewing area worth the extra $45? The reason I like a larger viewing area with the flip hoods is so I can find my arc a lot easier (sounds kinda dumb I know but it makes it WAY nicer)...with the auto dark I wasn;t sure if it would be necessary? Whats your thoughts, the only time I have really used auto dark hoods was when the regional miller rep would come to our shop and I would use his hood (his was the SpeedGlas), or if I was at my bro-in-laws and I would use his hood (his was an older Miller one)

I think so. If you're already spending 200something on a helmet, it's prolly worth the extra 45 for the bigger viewing area. I really like the extra space.

Looks like mine was $269.00 from Norco 2006 West 1500 South. Only about 4 months ago, so the price prolly hasn't changed much.

I've been wanting one myself. A friend of mine bought one from EBay, they are pretty cheap!

http://search.ebay.com/search/searc...aEndSort&query=Welding+Helmet,+Auto+Darkening

be carefull on those cheap ones, my boss bought one and it worked opposite of what it was supposed to, when you went to strike an arc it would get dark, then when you actually struck an arc it would get light...but if you looked at the sun through it, it would work fine...he got his at HF...

Mine's a 9002X. Sweet helmets, especially for TIG. My last auto helmet would turn on and off with a low arc when TIG welding sometimes.

yeah, I used to not care for the auto dark helmets, thats really when I grew to like them...when I was tigging

the 9002X is like the very top of their models isn't it? sweet helmet for sure...

I have been using a Hobart autodarkening hood. Seems to work pretty good. Picked it up mail order, paid about 175.00 for it. Only thing that sucks about it is the viewing area isn't as big as some the higher priced ones. But it works OK for my needs ;)

Here here, Grinch. I too have the HF and it works just great. The only bad thing about it is when it is darkened it is just a shade too dark for MIG welding. It seems like it wasn't too dark when using my old stick welder. I like it!

Short arc can actually be brighter than Stick You should not use a lighter shade.
