AUTO gear ratios

ok i was reading how they rate trails and on some of the ratings it said you need a(60 to 1) ratios but if you have an auto (like me) you only need half of that (30 to 1) why is that, i've never heard anything like this, so if my axle gears make me (47 to 1) it doesn't mean i'm really (94 to 1) does it? sorry if this is a stupid question. but thanx for any help

Because since the torque converter can slip, you can get away with much taller ratios than a guy with a manual tranny can. It acts as if it has lower gears, at the expense of generating heat.

Your 47:1 is actually fairly low for an auto--about the same as where I'm at. (and loving it)

its a toyota 22re auto thats why. if he had a v8 with that ratio would be nice. but a dual tcase would be sweet as well.

ok so is it like i'm good and low or not? and how do i stop from generating to much heat? would a tranny cooler do it? if so any good links.

I think I'm in the area of 65 or 70:1 which is quite low for an auto, but I love having that super low crawl gear and a good choice of range when I shift.
