I am converting my Cj2A from a dana 18 m21 rockcrusher trans to a turbo th350 and dana 300? Unless someone knows of another conversion that is short and cheaper than a $500 adaptor plus trans and t-case. Thanks, danormsby@mstar.net

It has a chevy 283. Not my first choice but it came that way. Being new to 4x4 is a C4 auto able to crawl a little? And is it pretty short? Thanks, Dan

the 283 is a really good motor, because they have a small journal crank it's lighter, and 90% of them had forged cranks from the factory, it's stronger by quite a bit then a stock 350.

Is there a reason you want to go Auto?

Pick up a summit/jegs catalog, you can get a C4 (Ford trans) that is set up to bolt up to the 283....C4's are one of few autos that have removable/interchangable bellhousings.

I have been crawling with a C4 for 18 years;)

the c4 is within 1 1/2 of a th350, You'll definatly save some funds if you match powerplant and trans, Bellhousing anyways, Maybe look into a powerglide, dana 18 or dana 300 swap, the pg is only 1.7 first gear, but there are some sweet tc that help with that gearing. or go to a 4.3 as a power plant which is about 5" shorter then the sbc you've got in there now, but then you're a full powertrain swap (which may actually be cheaper then buying 2 adpaters)

The main reason for an auto is it is really hard to shift with the cage and everything next to the clutch. Also my kids don't drive a stick too well. If I can get a cheap c4 will it bolt to anything or just a np203? My wife has set a spending limit close to zero.

anything with a matching input spline and the proper marraige coupler, but you have to get the bellhousing adapter and flexplate (and usually drill the flexplate)

203 is a long transmission, it's about 6" longer then just about any transmission around.

--> good place to start learning how to drive a stick eh?

if you're looking for low cost, see if you can find a th350/np208 or np205 combo shouldnt' be more then $300, but you'll have to have DLs made.
