Can't say my '89 has that problem. Always has been fine in winter/cold weather. Maybe try changing out the fluid and filter. Could be getting clogged up and doesn't want to suck fluid when it's cold and thick?

Unlike GM tranny's of old, the AW4's shifting is not regulated by a vacuum modulator. Shifting is solenoid controlled, which rely on feedback from the Throttle Position Sensor, shifter and various other sensors to modulate the shifting. An improperly adjusted TPS can cause erratic shifting, but will usually cause hunting between 3-4th gear.

Describe what you mean by "doesn't like to shift"?

could it be a vacuum leak

Not likely, the aw4 shifts electrically not with vacuum. There are three solenoids in the aw4 two that control the shifting and one that locks up the torque converter. You could have a solenoid, wiring connection, or controller module to it that doesn't work until it is warm or an internal problem in the aw4.
