AW4 installation

So the tranny in my jeep has bad interior seals and rather then rebuild it, I'm just going to stick in a used one. Is this a really hard project by yourself? Is it something any of y'all know how to do? I have access to a lift, so it's not lying on your back work. Also, the tranny is in Vegas right now and if anyone's going to vegas in the next couple of weeks it'd be really cool if someone could just grab it and bring it up here. I could pick it up at your house....there could be beer or dinner involved.....:D :D

the very first thing you should do is pressure wash the crap outta that thing. Having a good clean underside will make everything MUCH better to work on. you have a lift, do you have the tranny jack with it? that would make it very easy.

I'm guessing that there's prolly a tranny jack there. What it is is Mike gets to use the lifts at Hinkley Dodge, but I don't think there's a way to wash the undercarriage there. Plus they kind of like you to minimize what you're doing since they are a buisness. When we did the 1.6 swap on my samurai from the 1.3 my brother in law put the engine and tranny together, so I kind of saw how he did it with a manual transmission. I don't know though if stuff looks different, and he wasn't really great about explaining how you know how the engine connects to the tranny. Mike would be the one really doing it as he's tons more knowledgable about this type of thing then me.

get some of those car ramps, that you use to drive up on to chage your oil and what not, and take it down to the car wash on 7200 west and 3500 south, drive on the ramps, put your rubber suit on, and dump a bunch of quarters....

Man, that's some sound advice. When my T-case went out it was short after driving through some mud. That was the worst part was all the dirt and crap falling on me. I hate mud.:mad:
Other than that it's not as big a deal is it seems. When are you planning on doing it? What trans are you putting in it?

The ramp ideas a good one. We have some so we'll do that first. I'm kind of at the mercy of when I can get someone to grab it for me. Having just bought the truck and paid rent and every other bill that's due at the end of the month we're on the poor side, so I'm trying to get free shipping. I might have something lined up for it. I'm hoping to get it in the next couple of weeks, and then after that it's prolly going to be a Tuesday before 6 when everyone's working and can't be helpful. The shop closes at 6 so prolly get started on it in the morning and hopefully get it done by afternoon. :)

Any tips on it?

driving through mud and working on a muddy rig are two very different things, I actually dont' care much for mud either, because it gets all over everything.

Everyone but me. That's why I didn't bring my jeep. You should see some of the wacky stuff people do to their trucks here.

12" body lifts? Huh?

Anyway, I'm back to playin on good ol' rock come Monday.

Mike's from Miami so we've spent a couple of 6 month stints in South Florida (aka armpit of the world there's a reason people come here to die - Probably will soon be their state motto). We saw some pretty freaky trucks down there. What part of Florida are you in anyway?

actually, Winnemucca, Nevada is the "armpit of america" they have that displayed on a billboard just outside of town.

I talked to a transmission tech and said that the AW4 rarely goes bad. He did say that the pickup screen can get gunked up. He reccomended that I drain the fluid, refill it. Drive it for a day or 2 then drain it again, fill it up again and do that like 2 times, and that may solve the shifting problem. FYI here's what it's doing:

Put it in drive, takes a noticeable pause to get into gear
1st gear is okay
2nd gear is okay
3rd pops in, then drops down to 2nd then back to 3rd, then it ends up going to 4th once it reaches proper speed. Ideas?

]try that and put some conditioner in it to. i had a car do the same thing, and my jeep about two weeks ago would not shift change the fluild put some really good conditioner in it working good now just need to get a seal fixed in it know.
