Whats I have is a 63' Willys CJ-5 with an offset 44 rear and an offset 27 front. I want to keep my 65hp 200trq 4 squiral motor t98 trannie and the original 6.23:1 D18 twin stick. BUT I would like to go to a wider track when I do the spring over using XJ or YJ axles. DOES the rear axle have to be inline with the output of the trannie or can it have a slight angle to it?

I know this sounds like a stupid question but if it can have an up and down angle why cant it have a left to right angle?

Feel free to flame or inform.

Hmmm, So a TJ double cardon would maybe suffice? Or are we talking a custom cut shaft from like Toms?

This rig will never be a trail rig, not with as much money is being put into it to keep it mostly original.... The XJ axles are just a possibilty for now with prior said, but an idea none the less.

The rear can have an angle to it...But it really depends on how much and what type of driveline your using. You can even mount a carrier bearing somewhere underneath it and that will help with the vibration.

The ujoint doesn't know how it's oriented. As long as the total angle isn't outside the joint's spec, you're fine. I'd say on something as short as your Jeep, a double cardan is the way to go... proabably have to rotate your rear axle for it, easy enough.

OHMS, where is there room on a CJ-5 for a carrier bearing??? :D

I had bad luck on my cj7 when I had steep down angles and a side angle. If you want an axle that will work for the offset rear and give you a wider stance get a wagoneer rear from a 70s wagoneer. They have an offset rear for quadratrac that lines up well with your old tcase. Several people on the board have been trying to sell them.

I tottaly forgot of that option Dave, thanks for the reiminder...

You do not want a double cardan. You want a regular d-shaft with one joint on each end. Each joint will cancel out the vibration of the other if the compound angles are close.

Speaking from my minimal on-hand experience:) .... I think you'll need the CV at the t-case with the offset rear. I tried a single-joint driveline before my CV one and it had a constant vibration. With the CV it ran quite smooth, except some will have a slight vibration at a certain speed. Mine was at 25 mph, then completely went away. I could cruise 80 mph w/ that old 401 pushing everything through TH-400, Dana-20 and an offset (wagoneer) D-44, and no vibrations at any other speeds.....this is my experience, and the only they to find out on yours is to try it. It doesn't matter what anyone else has done, unless the exact set-up has been done and tried. Good luck, you'll probably be done with it before the Mando! (this set-up was in my old red Budweiser CJ)
