Axle Swap

So I'm wondering if there is any way to throw a passenger drop into my 93 wrangler which is currently driver drop? Any ideas other than changing out the transfer case? Thanks.

I'm a bit confused... you want to change out the front axle, from driver drop to pass. drop, without swapping out the t-case? How would you get power to the front axle?

You'd have to swap out the t-case for one that has the same drop as the front axle's differential.

What front axle to you want to swap in? What's the end goal, strength?

I've read that you can cut down the driver side to the length needed and then you can sleeve the passenger side to the length needed on that side. I have a yj with 37s and I'm looking for a front kingpin 60 but I can seem to find the right combo. I want 60s front and rear or 60 front and 14 bolt rear. My 37s are too small on my wrangler. I could fit 39s on it easily which is why I want to have stronger axles. Maybe I'll just keep waiting it out and hope someone wants to sell their driver drop 60.

Gotcha... you want to turn a passenger drop Dana 60 into a driver drop 60.

There used to be a shop in SLC that did that, but they are long gone. I don't know of anyone that does that anymore, it's a lot of work.

What about a t-case swap or simply upgrading to an Atlas? If you're talking 39's, a t-case upgrade would be a wise investment.

Lot of work. Get a set of Ford axles, they're out there. Heck, this very board has some for sale if you look. It's possible to get the tubes out of a pass.drop 60, but it sucks ASS to do, and then you still have to have it welded back up with new tube.. not sure if Teraflex can do that or what, and I don't know who else up here does. And then you'd still have the low pinion....

Search!

Which is why I would like a driver drop 60. I have found a few but then they are gone. I used to have a set on my j20 but someone stole the truck and I'm still waiting on the insurance money. Maybe as soon as I get the check I'll be able to afford some of the ones on here and not be so picky with price.

Ford 60

I have a drivers drop 60 from a 78 or 79 ford. I was saving it for a future project but maybe not.

My problem is just the opposite! I have the ford 60 going in my cj with a dana 300. I keep going back and forth on which one I should swap over. Flip the 300 or swap axle tubes? Either one will get a write up, as I havent seen them done on this board. I will do them myself in my garage.

So I think I found a set of axles. It's a ford dana 60 kingpin front out of a 91 f-350 and a rear ford 10.25. I know it doesn't have a ton of support but I figure it's a package deal and if anything goes wrong down the road with it I can always throw in a 60 or 14 bolt for a few hundred bucks. Does anyone know what the stock gear would be on these axles. The owner doesn't know.

I was trying to stay away from a t-case swap as much as possible.

Oh the joy of the 40" tire. That was my big project this year for my TJ. First the Dana 60 (I already had a 14 bolt in the rear). Man those full width axles make a Jeep fat! (I also got a 91 Ford axle from a F350).
Went ahead and stretched her a bit to 109" for better approach angle, etc.
Next is a Detroit and a 5.13 R/P to match the rear. Cha-ching.....

Then, upgrading the 30 spline outers to 35 spline, you'll see the obvious size difference, I didn't want to break them plus new Warn hubs to match. $$$

Then the 40" tires. Yow! Now, I have a big tire rub requiring moving my flares. I still drive this Jeep on the road to the trailhead so need to be somewhat legal. $$$

Now the TJ t-case has no power, dies on nearly every obstacle. So, what to do? Atlas? Would love it but very expensive. So, I go with a terra low scratch and dent (oh yes, they have them and they knock $300 off the price) $$$

Throw in changing to a Terraflex short shaft and rebuilt drive shaft (long story) and now you've got a finished product.

Thanks to Jeff and others who helped with the labor. I know you guys don't like working on Jeeps as much as Samurai's. Also sorry if this isn't very technical, it's just the steps you need to consider before an upgrade. Just because it'll fit doesn't mean it'll be cheap or easy.....

Good luck!

I want that!! Was that ford front 60 hard to put arms on the driver side or was it easy enough to work with? I've heard they can be a little harder to work with. That's the only draw back. Is it a draw back?

Yeah, it was tight but part of the plan was replacing the coil springs with air shocks which freed up some room. Not sure what you've got under your YJ, still leaf springs? If you get to the technical stuff, I'll refer you to Jeff (drtsqrl on this forum). He did the work. I know there were some concerns with everything fitting and it barely does......

I love Redroxx, she's a good Jeep even though we've broken about everything together.....

You can see how well she crawls with the Tera Low.....

It still has leafs as of right now. I was hoping to do some air shocks or coil overs also. That is the plan as soon as I get my axles. The leafs aren't for the yj though. They are a combo of parts which stretched my jeep about 10 inches. Wouldn't mind having a couple more inches though. BTW that video is pretty inpressive.

I am in the process of putting front and rear 60's under my tj if you want to come check it out so you can get more ideas and see how easy or hard it is, i am putting a ford high pinion 60 in the front and it coming along pretty good. i will have it done in a few days so if you want to see it how it is now. give me a call 801-657-1938
