Axle Swapping and ABS?

OK... I know I am going to be swapping out my rear Axle on my XJ in the next few months.. That said I have been looking at a lot of different Axles and what they require to swap them out but I have not once run into anyone talking about swapping out ABS componants.... I know that the stock brake system has ABS sensors on it but it would be a pain in the but to swap out the brake setup...
So my question for those who have delt with this is..
1. Do you just kill the ABS system when you put in the new Axle
2. Do you swap out and fab parts to get the ABS sensors to work
3. Am I on drugs here (FSM says I am not but you know how mopar never wants to admit what you can realy do )

When I put my F8.8 in my YJ, I didn't even attempt to get the ABS to work. I just left the plugs hanging underneath the jeep, then got into the dash and broke the ABS bulb that turned on after I did the swap (couldn't get the stupid bulb out, so I squashed it with some pliers!). I haven't heard of anyone even trying to get it to work, let alone succeeding.

I kept all the ABS braking system in my '91 XJ. After a few axle changes there was nothing at all left at the axle end of my ABS system. No issues.

The only issues you're going to have are no ABS and the warning light that'll come on in your dash. Nothing else will change. I was glad to get rid of my ABS, it didn't help me at all. On ice/snow, I still had no control when I lost traction when braking, the only difference was that my brake pedal would shake while I slid uncontrollably. Ahh, the joys of driving a short wheelbase...

No issues


I did have some odd pedal travel at times, but I think that was related to all the junk on the '91 brake system and what a pain it was to bleed EVERY connection.

If you were to take out the relays and fuses from under the hood for the ABS would that still have the light on the dash come on? Just a thought, although I am guessing that it would.

in sept i swapped my ABS D35 for an 8.25. i just cut the wires that come out from under the rear seat drivers side (if your giving the axle to someone whom may need those wires still in tact, just disconnect from the module under the DS rear seat and pull through the grommet). then i pulled each of the two relay and the maxi fuse under the hood. i still had the ABS light on the dash. it drove me nuts so i pulled the bulb. it was hard to figure out at first so i pulled the actual pannel that the lights are mounted to. they pull out similar to the way the bulb sockets do for the brakelights.

but yes, the light will still come on. no biggie though. pulling it took me all of 20 min even trying to figure it out.

what year is your cherokee? some early years with abs did not have brake boosters. i think 89 and 90 where the years. i know this for sure on the 90 cherokees, because my 90 has no brake booster. when i replaced my rear 35 with a non abs 44 i just clipped the abs sensors at the axle. the brakes got weird on me after that. i am not sure if it was the lack of abs back there or the newly added 35" tires. i still have brakes in the rear and the abs is still working in the front, i think. i am not too concerned because i cant drive it on the road anyway. when i put the 9" rear and 44 front, i will be installing a brake booster.

I am in the newest XJ possable 01 ... its a daily driver so I can't have funky brakes... I don't care if I have ABS or not to be honest just what the best way to set up the new D44 in the rear end

Quick question... have any of you guys who have deleted your ABS ever been in a wreck after? I'm curious what insurance comanies might say under these circumstances. Insurance companied seem ready at any occasion to bend us over with a 120 grit aluminum oxide condom, and this seems like a great excuse for them not to pay.

Good point.......... I'd expect to get screwed by an insurance company.

I've seen a writeup before from someone that swapped a D35 with a F8.8 and hooked up the ABS. Do a search on yahoo, I know it's out there. I thought I saved the link, but I just looked for it and can't find it.

It's not just as easy as hooking up the wires. D35 has sensors out at the wheel, where the 8.8 is at the carrier. I want to say if you hooked it up with a couple of diodes....? Dunno..

usually when one part of the ABS system is not working the ABS is disabled and good old fashioned braking is what your left with. there should be no bad side effects if the hydraulic system is in good shape. its not always this way but more offten than not.
