Bought our 6 yesterday, decided on all rhode island reds. Beside one case of poo butt that I handled today so far so good. About 1/2 the way through of building the house part of my chicken tractor also.

Do the chicks need to be inside inside, or can they be in the shed under a heat lamp on a bed of hay? How long are we talking until they can be let into the coup to claim their nests?

As long as it can be kept a constant 80ish degrees, shed should be fine. Put them in a box with a small waterer and feed, and make sure you cover the entire thing with wire. They WILL get out given the opportunity. Pine chips work well for their bedding.

Mine have been ok temp wise in our garage. I lower the heat lamp closer at night and raise it up during the day. They aren't suppose to stay outside until 8 weeks I have read
