Bad gas in 95 zj

The last time I rotated my fuel stored in plastic cans I missed 3 of them and I just added about 8 gallons of 2008 gas, that had added Stay-bil in it, to my tank that had about 6 gallons of fresh gas. I tried to siphon all the gas out of the tank and the hose stops before it hits gasoline. Since that is what I have always done to siphon gas what am I missing. I know the gas lines are pressurized for fuel injection but I thought the pressure was released when the gas cap is removed. My questions: 1. Why won't the siphon hose go any further into the tank. 2. Is there a better way to drain gas out of a ZJ. 3. I have never tried it with gas this old but would it work to add another approximately 6 gallons of fresh gas with some injector cleaner.

Note: Only smart remarks that help will be accepted.

If I remember right, many cars have a baffle in the filler pipe now, making it hard to get a hose in there. I could be wrong though.

There is nothing wrong with filling up and running the bad gas out. It might run funky but to be honest, I've gotten iffy gas from the station from time to time and no harm seems to have come to any of my TBI engines. Of course, 8gal in one of my tanks amounts to less than 1/4 tank, but...

Hope that helps.

I suspect that there is a check valve inline between the pump and fuel rail. Otherwise it would take a moment to build pressure while starting. If its like the fords that I am familiar with. There is most likely a schrader valve on the fuel rail for the purpose testing fuel pressure. perhaps you could find a hose with a screw on type fitting to thread onto the schrader Valve so you can use the fuel pump to drain the fuel. However I think you may want to find a way to run the pump without simultaniously sending power to your ignition as that will likely damage your ignition. you could also try taking off the fill hose for better access to the tank it may have something in it to prevent thieves from getting a hose in the tank. If you do depress the valve on the fuel rail be prepared for a small amount of fuel under fifty pounds of pressure to come out suddenly. Protect your eyes and please have a fire extinguisher handy of course. I like to also have the garden hose right close and running when dealing with matters such as this. good luck be safe David.

I think I'd just top it off and run it out if it were me. Heck, that '08 gas might not even be "bad", since it had stabil in it. Does it smell bad? If not, I'd definitely run it.

The old gas smelled like gas not varnish. I topped it off with 10 more gallons of fresh and put a bottle of injector cleaner in it and ran it around the neighborhood for 20 minutes and it runs like a champ. It even seems better than before. Maybe I should use more old gas. Thanks you guys, this site is great. Now I am thinking of keeping the zj for another 17 years. It would sure be cheaper than buying a new 4x4.

I never had any luck siphoning gas out of new vehicles due to baffles or whatever they put in there that prevents the hose from going in.

I have run gas much older than that mixed with newer gas to make up for it and just let it work itself out. Never had any issues. The last time I did it, it was with gas that was 7 years old and about a half a tank of a 22 gallon tank. That was a carbed motor and it popped and backfired a few times but never anything serious.

Might get lucky with the schrader valve but that could take a while to pump it out, I know the fuel pressure is high but don't know about the volume. If it's not equipped with a valve I suppose you could disconnect the fuel line from the fuel rail and run the pump like that. But X2 on running the pump without the ignition turned on.

Old gas probably has less ethanol in it. I'll bet the Jeep loves it! StaBil is good stuff, and I wouldn't hesitate to just run the old gas through it.
