Bad sending unit?

My oil pressure on my TJ always reads 80, the highest the gauge goes. It doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold, at idle or driving. It had the correct amount of oil too. I'm thinking it must have a faulty sending unit, any other suggestions?

I'm not 100% sure with the tj sending unit, but I would think that it if the switch is open it will peg it one way and if it's closed it will peg it the other way. First thing I'd try is to make sure it's still plugged in. If it is, then I'd unplug it and see what the gauge shows. If it's still pegged at 80, try grounding it with a wire. If you do that and the gauge pegs to 0, then you know the switch is stuck open. Then replace it.

I agree with this, except that I think an open circuit would read 0, and a grounded circuit would be pegged at max (but I don't know for sure either...) Check the harness and connector to see if you have some wiring grounding out on something. It is also possible that the sending unit is just toast.

Does the gauge move when you turn the key on/off? It should go to 0 when the key is off I think... If it doesn't, it's possible that the gauge in the dash cluster is bad.
