Hobart 175. I haven't checked the polarity, but it was welding perfectly with the Lincoln wire, and then welding like ass with the new spool.

My hobart 180 did the same thing, it just started splatter welding with solid wire. It had great penetration and the puddles looked goot ut i just couldn't get rid of the splatter. I tried different spools of wire, played with gas pressure, changed liners & tips and couldn't figure it out. Went back to flux and it welded fine:-\

I'm sure it was something simple, but I just used it as an excuse to get a larger welder.

This is different. The welds did not look good. They had holes and crap all through them. :(

I took a bunch of wire off the spool per Caleb's suggestion. I did a test weld and it worked perfectly again. Only about 5" of weld, but no holes or anything. It looks good. For now I'll assume the top layer of wire was oxidized or contaminated.

I guess that's better than loosing an entire roll :-\

My Dad had this problem a few years ago and said the wire somehow got wet and he could see a little bit of discoloring on the wire when he looked real close. He's down in Texas and with all the humidity I'm surprised it's not always a problem there.
