Be careful people

So today was the third time in two years I had to go to the eye doctor and have a metal sliver removed from my eye. Each time I was wearing good quality safety glasses. I'm pretty sure I will never even look at an angle grinder again without ether a face shield or wrap around full coverage goggles. I could just be one unlucky SOB I suppose. I seem to be getting used to the little pocket drill that spins at probably 18000 RPM poking into my eyeball, and that is not a good thing.

After it happened last night I switched over to a pair of ski goggles I had laying around in the garage. I swear I will never allow this to happen again. I also managed to catch a piece of metal just right(or wrong) and have the grinder kick back and rip out of my hands to tear into my jeans on my inner thigh. I guess I really am unlucky, or just need to be more careful.

Moral of the story folks be careful. It's not like I am some idiot who has never used power tools before, I think I just got a little careless and I got off lucky. Had the grinder managed to cut my artery I could have died, I got off without a scratch but with a nice hole in a good pair of jeans.

I feel that sometimes its worse to wear safety glasses cause they actually help get things in your eye. I don't know how many times I have had to get metal out of my eye. Worst time was when they had to use a needle on my eye, didn't pass out but I was basically passed out. none of those packets they use under your nose, smelling salts, worked for me but it was making the doctors feel sick for how many they were using. We also had a guy at work that never wore safety glasses and he was our grinder, they told him he could never get a cat-scan cause his eye would get ripped out, he never went to the doctor. I tried goggles but I couldn't stand it. The good thing about the eyes is how quickly they can heal.

I have never had to have metal removed from my eye, only a paint chip... funny thing is after I went to the doc I found out it was off a locomotive at work.

But I always get chunks of grinding disc in my eyes, no matter how careful. I swear I could grind with my eyes closed and still get some.

You can only grind/cut with certain areas of the disc depending on a few factors. Grinders kicking back are usually a pretty good sign of an inexperienced user. Every time I see this happening I usually wander off for cover.

Had my eye drilled before, nothing like having your eye literally pouring water because you have rust in your eye

I was at Bear Lake water skiing and got a really little piece of shell in my eye. Figure that one out for me. I burned my eyes being in a shop where they were welding. I wasn't even looking at it. That night was the worst night of my life. It literally felt like some dumped a bucket of sand in each eye.

not fun having them use the buffing tool thing, the last time they told me to come back in a few days to get all the rust taken care of, not sure whey they didn't just do it then, i never went back. didn't feel like getting my eye worked on again.

Only the third time in two years??? I'm on my fourth time in just under a year lol. That drill is not fun if your eye isn't very numb. I wear safety glasses as well and still manage to have magnetic eyes. My wife was sick of watching me get my eyes drilled and bought me the ski goggle type as well. Hopefully with having the buggy done I won't get any more in my eyes. At least for a while :)

I know I was being careless when it happened its not something that ever happens to me.

I haven't had anything solid in my eyes that needed medical attention, yet. Although, as a Navy Photographer, I had more than my share of chemicals splash in my face and eyes. Eyewash stations work and I became pretty good at keeping my eyes open in the water streams. I had Lasik 10 years ago, and was quite surprised the first time I crawled under a vehicle, how much stuff hit my face that I'd never really noticed before. I wear safety goggles when drilling and grinding. And frequently when crawling under vehicles. Though I do tend to forget now and again. Perhaps its time for a faceshield as well...

I thought I was the only one. I was wearing safety glasses as well when it happen. Took a few days before I went to the doctor. I hated having it pulled out. It has started to rust as well.

Weird, I just wear my regular eyeglasses and have been lucky I suppose, on my second grinder in 3 years and use them quite a bit. I have had grinding wheel dust in my eyes but nothing that needed more than eye drops to flush it out. But I am about to start a trailer project and have a pair of clear ski goggles I plan to wear when grinding the metal and paint, also plan to wear a breather mask.

Had the leg thing also happen. Closer to an artery than I am comfortable with. If you notice I had also just cut both my fingers and was lucky to still have them using a skill saw blade on my grinder. I have been much safer ever since.
