just venting.....

Last Tuesday went dirtbiking and dislocated my shoulder pretty bad. I'm stuck in a sling now for who knows how long. The thing that is annoying is that it doesn't hurt just sitting there so I feel like I should be able to work! I almost wish that it did ache so I could feel justifiably crippled. I've been trying to stay busy doing paper work and running errands but it sucks! I can't drive my truck because it's a stick so I'm driving the Vitara.....Manly ego is dwindling.....

I'll find out next week via an MRI if I need surgery or not. Who's gone through this? What kind of recovery time should I expect?

Having said all of that, it could be a LOT worse, and I really shouldn't complain too much.

But it still suck being injured!

Crashed my dirtbike 25-30 years ago. Since then three arthroscopic surgerys on my shoulder, total joint replacement in 2007, infection in shoulder in 2011, removed artificial joint in Jan 2012, put in temporary "spacer" joint", gallons of anti-biotics, replaced with new joint in April 2012, 5 months of physical therapy and now I can brush my own teeth and comb my own hair. Whoopee.
Take as good a care of you shoulder as you possibly can and do whatever the doc's tell you. Good Luck.

geeze, it sounds like i'll need to take extra care of it if I want a full recovery! I'm going to be going to lake Powell in a couple weeks and I've been contemplating trying wake boarding and such but maybe I should just lounge on the beach for the week!

I dislocated my shoulder and had 2 surgeries on it and spent 6 weeks in a sling and another 3 months at the physical terrorist ... :-( and still have troubles now and then . I would stay away from the wake board and take it easy . It won't take much to further injure it . Trust me . It took me four months to be able to lift my ARM with its own muscles high enough to put on stick deoderant I had to switch to the spray on kind ..

Dislocated my shoulder first week of my mission. Waited the whole time til the week I got home to have surgery. Once they got in there I had a torn labrum, a bone spur and massive amounts of scar tissue. They cleaned it up and I tried going back to play baseball at UVU like originally planned but lost about 10 mph on my fast ball and kills after even 10 minutes of throwing. I am right handed. With my left arm behind my back I can raise my arm to scratch my shoulder blade, but with my right arm I am lucky to get above my butt. Waiting for insurance time to cover my next surgery. I did pt but it wasn't enough. If you need surgery, choose your surgery wisely. Mine was knife happy and he botched it. His name is Dr. Kimball. He was the BYU football medical guy, and has since been fired due to too many of the instances. Good luck.

wow, this has me worried! I'll definitely research before getting surgery! I've talked to some people that have fully recovered in 6 months but I'm thinking now that that's not the norm! i guess we'll see. [crossing my fingers]

First separation was the result of bad wrestling technique. 31 years ago. Multiple seps and a couple dislocations later, I have arthritis in my right shoulder. Next sep or dislocation is surgery. Throwing a baseball with my kids wasn't bad. Throwing a football with my son was murder. PT and exercise to strengthen the shoulder is a big help (though one dislocation was during pushups for a fitness test when I was on active duty...). I can hear the shoulder grind and pop while swimming. But its not nearly as loud as my knee before I had it replaced.

I somehow tore the bajesus out of my shoulder a year ago lifting my jeep top on. I was bed ridden for 2 weeks. The pain from the weight of my arm just hanging unsupported was absolutely unbearable for a month, and couldn't really move my arm for 2 or 3 months. My shoulder still doesn't have full articulation and probably won't entirely recover. I was probably the most pain I've been though. I've had my fair share of breaks and sprains to limbs, but shoulder injuries are horrible.

I had slap lesion back in 2000 on my right shoulder and then I injured my left in 2004 in the army and had to go to doctor after doctor in the army then after I retired in 2006 I had to deal with the VA... finally in 2007 the VA told me to go to a civilian doctor and they would pay for it...

I was told to go see Doctor Tashian (doctor T) up at the UofU orthopedics he specializes in shoulders... after a MRI with dye he told me I had 3 tears in the rotator cuff and my bicept muscle had seperated from the shoulder and pulled down my arm.... Pretty much what Tacoma had done...

I had surgery in dec 2007 and was out for 4.5 months before able to return to work... of those 4months I spent 70 days in a lazyboy recliner... due to they do not allow you to sleep in a regular bed....

Here it is 2012 and being an electrician I work above my head alot and I get about 10-15 mins before my arm goes to sleep and I have to pull it down and wait 5 mins before starting again... and I do not have much strength in that arm anymore...

wow guys, I'm definitely going to take it easy and hope for a full-ish recovery!

Mikeguyver -I hear ya on the pain! It was definitely the worst pain I've ever been in....and then when he popped it back in? Forget it! I'm sure childbirth is tough, but it can't be worse than that pain. Imagine guy in movie being tortured and screaming out at the top of his lungs in pain....That was me. My wife was there and she said that she was a little embarrassed for me because it sounded a little over the top, but I didn't even realize i was screaming (manly scream) until she told me afterwards.

This is like talking to a bunch of guys in ER. What ever you do take it easy. You can not afford to get back to 100% too soon. Try sitting and reading, TV, Sudoku, etc. just take it easy and stay away from surgery as long as you can.
