Bender Questions

I've been thinkin' about getting a bender also. My concern is where to place it.
The folks that have them, do you have the pedestal for the bender also? I would think for the strong arm type, it's almost req'd.

I was thinking of mounting the pedestal on like a 1" thick by 12" sqare piece of steel. That way I could recess the bolts on the bottom side so I could stand the thing flush on the concrete. From there I'd secure that thick plate to the concrete - in the middle of my garage. The challange comes w/ the fasteners. I'd like to be able to remove it when I'm done so that I can pull the freaking cars in. Are there such a thing for mounting to concrete?

So I wanted to here what you folks are doing?

yep, thats exactly how I have mine mounted...in the concrete with 1/2" drop-in anchors...works great...I just leave the bolts in the anchors when not in use so crap doesn;t get inside the threads...

another thing is you probably want to offset the bender jsut a little in the garage (depending on size of your garage) because sometimes your tube will be too long if its mounted right in the middle of a double car garage...ask me how I found out:D

12x12x3/8 plate with 2x2x.250 with a smaller 3/8's plate the bender bolts to.

as for anchors they are for a 5/8 bolt so when it is remove it is just 4 threaded inserts in the floor.

I've put miles of tube through my JD2, never greased it at all, and never did any grinding on the follow bar. Also have never had a problem with gouging the tube or dies. Seems to me that DOM tube (only stuff I've ever put through the bender) comes with a coating of grease on it. I'll second (or third, or fourth) the notion that you should skip the degree ring, it's useless. Before you start ruining tube, go read Bending 101 on Pirate 4x4, it really has some great info, and I use the techniques in there every time I bend stuff. My mounting pedestal is a thick square tube, with about 16" square plates welded to each end. I used four drop in concrete anchors (half inch), and I leave the bolts in the anchors when not in use to keep crap out of the threads.

I already read bending 101 on Pirate a long time ago...Its a darn good write up. Changed my entire view on bending.. I have used the Protools bender down at Jeepers on more than one occasion so im new to bending but not to the point I have never bent the chit.........
Thanks for the info on the stands belive it or not that was going to be my next question. Its a good thing I already have a hammer drill and half inch flush shells for concrete :D :D :D .... One of the tools us plumbers use all the time.
WD 40 is new to me. I have always used white lithum grease. WD 40 sure seems like it would be alot easier...
Thanks for the info. Thats why I like this board. It hasent gotten to the point like pirate where if you ask a question about a product you get blasted and told to search search search.... Somtimes you want peoples current opnions on a product not the opnion they had 6 months ago....

pic of stand

Is it cheaper to build your own pedelstal or get one w/ your bender? I got the impression that the JD2 came with the stand.

I like the gussets at the base. I hadn't thought of that.

build your own for sure...I was a sucker and bought one, about $80, and its about $5-$10 in steel...way super easy to make...and the one I bought isn't very beefy, it only bolts to the floor with two bolts (I would prefer four liek everyone else has done) and the top is only two holes...thats it and you are done...

build your own. not worth what they want for them. plus I had the steel already, was just some scrap stuff left over from other projects :D

Wasatch steel has precut plates that are 1/2" thick, 10"x10" or so with 4 holes punched in the corners.
