bfg vs. goodyear

I like BFGs myself. They seem to wear all right, last for a while and have good street manners. I run the 35s. I have known several people though that hate them, as the sidewall seems to blow out and puncture easily. I've seen it happen, but not on my rig. Maybe i've been lucky.

Are we really arguing about which has a stronger sidewall? That's like saying "which is harder to tear, Kleenex or toilet paper?" I've seen plenty of both tires with huge sidewall gashes.

That said, I was really happy with the BFG AT's I had back in the day. The MT's I had afterward didn't grip as well in wet stuff, and since I was doing tougher trails I cut a couple sidewalls. I've never run MTR's personally, but from what I've seen/heard they're a decent tire, as long as you don't abuse them.

I can hardly tell a difference noise wise over the street tread Geolanders I replaced and the ride is almost as smooth as it was before the change.

Too soon to comment on wear.

Sounds to me like you need to get out and meet more people (or not take the company line on what tire they want you to sell. Having worked in the tire business before, I am shocked by what some saleman tell me).

Oh, and a less expensive tire to consider in Dean Wildcat (made by Cooper)

?????.........

They've only been THE most popular 'off-road' tire for about the past 30 years. I've never used them off-road, but I had a set on a few rigs and had no complaints driving them on the street. I'm an @ss if the tires don't balance and run true. They're definitely not a mud tire.

Your high...

I have owned 5+ sets of AT's on different rigs (including 2 sets on my DD Tacoma), I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to put another set on, they have been great tires. I know a ton of people that have run them (my dad has run a couple sets on his Cummins with great liking).

As for discontinuing them... I'll bet you $20 your boss is out of his mind, the only plausible reason they would discontinue them is if they has a similar product they were introducing (such as when the AT & MT went to KO). There is no way BFG is going to dodge out on the HUGE AT market share they currently have.

WorkHorses and Silent Armor's are E rated (and heavier), aren't they? I don't know if a BFG AT is over a 'D' rating. I honestly don't think they were designed to be used on heavier vehicles (say 3/4 and 1 ton pickups).

If you missapply the tire, I don't think you're going to be happy with it at all. I don't care what brand it is. I've personnally not been impressed with the Toyo MTs off-road (buggies and 'built' rigs being my observation), but I bet they are an AWESOME tire for a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup that sees most of it's use on road.

For a lighter weight vehicle (say a Jeep or early Bronco or whatever), the BFG AT is a great match, IMHO. Personally, I like something more aggressive but it's hard to argue with 30ish years of success.

you're right about the misapplication issue. and personally i am not impressed with the toyo mt's either even though thier tread design has a very firmiliar look (MTR) i don't understand how the tiny changes they show can make such a difference in grip but that's technology i guess. haha. as for buggies. being that i've never been to a comp in person or anything every buggie i've ever seen had 40'' mtr's on it. and all the guys that i've asked about buggies said the mtr or the Krawler's were the best tire they'd used. hence why i run MTR's.

p.s. i asked my boss about the bfg at discontinue again and he said the bfg at ko is in the process of discontinuation. so if you guys don't think this is true maybe someone here would be willing to email bfg or something. but ya that is what i have been told by more than one person so i'm begining to believe it.

I think that you had it right when it comes to heavy duty tire, the BFG AT is not heavy duty, maybe half ton to jeep or smaller but you dont need to be having them on one ton trucks or farmers trucks for heavy duty work. I see them alot on "State Streeter" Super duties but those are the guys who dont like them, running those D tires on a what 6-7 thousand lb truck has to not be good, I ran them on my Suzuki and probably got about 65k out of them, that with abusing them. On a durango they got about 45-50k, very decent tire up to that weight class, but to go with a heavier vehicle? Questionable, compound might be a bit too rough and not supportive enough.

I would like to see where your boss is getting his information on this.

PS I am an ass, but learn to spell, please.

A friend of mine is running I believe E-rated BFG a/t's on his StupidDuty. I'll have to check that. I remember him saying they were hardish to get.

Personally I like the AT's, they're pretty sweet, and the newer ones with the big sidewall lugs absolutely rule in snow. They wore ok too.

as far as sidewall strength goes, I could care... but only because my rockpig is going to be running Michelin's, and the sidewall on those is at least a 1/2" thick. ;)
