I have really been wanting to do this to a Duce or five ton military truck, mostly for recovery purposes but I get hung up on the legal part, has anyone put any thought in to this as far as how to go about legally driving one...

Call Boyce Equipment. They sell them. I am sure they have the process figured out.

Thanks for the info, I'll give him a call, I meet a few of the Boyce guys at blazer bash about six years ago and seem to call on them every time I get one of those "crazy" ideas... I'm just excited that there are special exceptions for recreational vehicles I really didn't want to jump through a ton of hoops just to get my crawler to the trail or off a trail

Never scored the trailer, but I will post up before I roll. Just hauling the RZR and crawler down.

Ended up just renting a car for the wife. Long story short, she will be staying in Vegas and meeting me back in St. George.


I will be at sand hollow from Weds through Sunday. Going to be an interesting weekend. I have crawler friends and ATV friends meeting up down there. Not sure which toy I will play with.

The RZR just a got a new built motor by K&T performance. 9:1 pistons, head work, fire ring cylinders, valve springs and a bunch of other special stuff. Just picked it up on Weds. Hopefully I can keep them both running all week. I need to find some 110 unleaded so I can crank the boost. I built the motor for 15-18 psi, but only plan on running 10-12.

What's your front axle weight with the 4runner on the deck and no trailer? You may be getting close to the front axle rating with the long single wheelbase.

I am not sure. If have a chance next week I wanted to hit the scales and find out. I am looking at changing rear tires and need to know necessary load rating. This would also tell me if I need to load the 4runner backwards.

Still fairly new to this project, not completely dialed in yet.

The front axle should be a 12k axle. I wonder what the front weighs empty. My honest guess would be between 6-8k.

I have been trying to work a deal on a tractor to pull my 18k lb toy hauler with. My wife thinks I am crazy, but it really would not be any worse gas mileage than my 6.7 CTD gets.

Is 12k the max for the front? That is just a number I have heard, but not verified. I will grab a weight ticket next week and find out.

You will be impressed. Most of my friends think I am crazy as well, but the ride and control in amazing. I really like my truck. It is currently an ugly beast, but I am only a few months into the project.

Your door sticker should tell the axle rating. The truck should weigh 18k with dual rear axles. Id guess 16k now. Id guess 10k on the front empty? Curious to know if i am way off or not.

The bed I put on weighs almost 2k, plus the runner weighs 4550. I bet your right.

Do you work on these for a living or just know about them?

My old setup was a Dodge 2500 Diesel pulling a 33' 5th wheel and my 16' enclosed behind it.

I hauled it across the scale fully loaded with full tanks, fuel, and food etc on Easter.
I was 43 pounds over 26,000...lol

The truck didn't really like it but it did it, as long as you didn't need to back up...

I already miss the 5th wheel, I really considered buying a big truck to keep hauling it all but I wanted a longer enclosed and I didn't want to be noticeably over on length...

This is where I was at too. My 99CTD pulling my 30' Gn and 2 rigs was only getting 7mpg. I found a 99 Freight and it gets about the same mileage with the 12.7 Detroit. But it also has Jakes, bigger brakes, more power for the passes, and is a LOT more comfortable to sleep in on the side of the road.

Mine is singled and has a 20k rating on the rear (40k for twins), and 12k on the front. My tag is in the glove box with axle ratings.
