Moab Field Office's Economic Contributions Highlighted in Secretary's Economic Report
On July 9, 2012, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar released The Department of the Interior’s Economic Contributions for Fiscal Year 2011. The Report concludes that the Department of the Interior contributed $385 billion to the U.S. economy and supported 2 million jobs in Fiscal Year 2011. In Utah, DOI activities contributed $13 billion and generated 83,000 jobs. The report can be found at http://www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/info/newsroom/2012/july/NR_07_08_2012.html
This Report also includes examples of local and regional economic contributions, by agency. For the entire BLM nationwide, three of the four examples provided were from economic activities generated by the Moab Field Office. Projects included the North Moab Area Cooperative Community Trail Project, new mountain bike trail construction activity, and commercial filming and photography. These examples highlighted cooperative efforts with Grand County, volunteer trail groups, and the film industry, for which the state film commission shares credit, in promoting Public Lands and supporting the local economy here in Grand County. Six BLM staff members nationwide contributed to the Secretary’s Economic Report for FY 2011, including Bill Stevens of the Moab Field Office.
