What is a good primer to use? Over bare metal? Over previous prime/paint/bare spots? Anything I can buy in a can?

Not 4x4, but the paint on the trunk of the Miata is peeling. I would like to fix it right. Do I need to take it to bare metal? Can I just take it down to primer and re-primer it? I will have a little bondo on it for a couple dings.

If that goes well, I will try the hood of the tow rig....the clear coat is crackling BAD!!

-_- Now I just have to find stuff to bribe MBryson with -_-
:D

When I worked at a custom paint shop-We always got the car really close for paint by sanding to bare metal-then repeated filler/sand filler/sand until the panel was really close. Then we used 'Euro Sealer' (not sure what it goes by at the paint store) but was a really thick primer/finish filler that can be used for that 'final' sand w/1000-1200 grit.

For bare metal, it's safest to use an acid etch primer (1 decent coat) and then the catalyzed primer. I have yet to see an decent primer in a 'can' (assuming spray can?). You usually have to mix decent quality products to specific ratios {found on the can}.

Peeling paint:----take it to the metal so you don't have to worry about it anymore (as stated by TK1).

:eek::eek::eek: Wow, I'm not sure I could even keep paint on a surface that smooth. I bet it looked SWEET! If we had anything that nice, we'd color sand and then sand and buff the clearcoat for a 'FLAT' finish

For a really show quality finish, use your hand to feel for high and low spots... Try rubbing Marc's head first, then rub the Comando. Keep working it, till it's smooth as Marc, and you're set to shoot.

WASH and rewash and rewash the whole rig (engine compartment, axles, brakes, everything) and then rewash it again. Blow (compressed air--BC might be able to blow that much in a BS session, but I can't) off any and all water from mouldings, gaskets etc and start masking for paint.

Wipe with wax and grease remover, tack, spray a decent coat of sealer, tack, base coat, tack and throw the clear on.

So I laid down some bondo today..... neat stuff :redneck: I guess the Long Board (as Marc said it) keeps the shape even. Is using a 2x4 and wraping it with sand paper ok or do I need to go buy a long sander.....?
