Bonneville Speed Week

I made my first trip to Speed Week in 1975, and have been there many times since. My last trip to Speed Week was in 2018. I like to camp at the bend of the road to the salt and talk with the others there. In 2018, I waived over a guy driving a 1934 Pontiac hearse powered by a 12 valve Cummins. As we sat there having a few brews, several other outfits stopped and added to the gab fest. You can also wander through the pits and can usually strike up conversations with the drivers and crews. Sometimes, they will even invite you to pitch in to help.

During the 2010 Speed Week, my wife was asked to model for some photos with a very radical rat rod, so that made her day.

I went a few years ago. Take a shade canopy, binoculars, drinks, lunch, etc. We took bicycles so we could pedal over to the pits from where we set up. It's like a giant car show along with the salt flat cars. People in the pits were happy to talk about their cars. Definitely worth seeing.

I went out there a few times in the early aughts to take pictures back when I was all about shooting on film. I've got a stack of B&W photos somewhere from the pits and the starting line. Its pretty cool. But yeah, big hat, dark sunglasses, and as much water as you can carry are a must!

I don't know how I missed this thread. I've been going out to Bonneville, and helping on various LSR efforts, since the late 90's. Although I missed the last several years due to family concerns.

Anyway, a few pics.

This Turbocharged Hayabusa held the record in it's class at 246 mph, for years. It made approx. 615 rwhp, running on VP Import gas.

Early on in the tuning. Notice the license plate, it was street legal... :D



Here I'm holding the bike at a later BUB's M/C only event, for the owner, prior to a pass.

This TurboBusa was running on Methanol. It made 670 rwhp, but poor Salt conditions, and some ignition issues, kept it's speed to 235 mph.

Another friend I helped over the years. He eventually got this bike (a Turbocharged '89 ZX-10) up to 272.610 mph. The more-enclosed bodywork makes a big difference. Of course the more-enclosed bodywork puts it in a different class.

One streamliner powered by two blown Hemi's. The Burkland's (Gene (RIP), Betty, and Tom) are great people. I love the Doppler Effect sound of it coming past at about 450 mph. Shame about the idling diesel engine sound...


This car is now on display at the Museum of American Speed, in Nebraska.

If the weather cooperates, the Salt is decent, and the event(s) are held, I'll be out there.
