How wild is this? There is a video feed that is only working some of the time.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A 6-year-old boy is floating over northeastern Colorado in a homebuilt balloon and authorities are racing to try and rescue him.

The balloon, in the shape of a flying saucer is covered in foil and filled with helium. It has a compartment for a passenger underneath. It lifted the boy into the air near Fort Collins Thursday morning after the balloon became unhooked at the boy's home.

"We were sitting eating, out looking where they normally shoot off hot air balloons. My husband said he saw something. It went over our rooftop. Then we saw the big round balloonish thing, it was spinning," said neighbor Lisa Eklund.

The father and son had apparently been working on the aircraft for some time..

Airtracker 7 located the craft at 12:35 p.m. at about 8,000 feet in Weld County. It appeared to be slightly tilted. The altitude of the balloon was fluctuating between 7,500 and 8,500 feet.

Skies in the area are partly cloudy and southwest wind speeds are 15 to 20 miles per hour.

"It is believed the device could rise to 10,000 feet," said Eloise Campanella, Larimer County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.

"The structure at the bottom of the balloon that the boy is in is made of extremely thin plywood and won't withstand any kind of a crash at all," said Erik Nilsson, Larimer County Emergency Manager.

Deputies from Larimer and Weld counties are tracking the balloon as it drifts. Experts said it could remain airborne for up to 12 hours.

This was never meant to carry anybody," said Larimer County sheriff's spokeswoman Eloise Campbell.

Larimer County fire dispatchers asked if Airtracker 7 could use an outside speaker to ask the boy if he has a valve to release helium.

"Is there a way to release some of the helium that this kid may know?" the dispatcher asked. "Maybe we can get him to lower it."

FAA spokesman Mike Fergus said the agency has been notified and it was unclear whether traffic controllers had picked it up on radar.

The balloon may drift into air traffic control corridors used by Denver International Airport, based on its current location and direction. Deputies alerted DIA air traffic controllers to warn them about letting aircraft fly through the area.

7News confirmed the boy is the son of Richard and Mayumi Heene appeared on an episode of ABC's "Wife Swap."

Richard Heene has been described by friends as a sort of "mad scientist." He has a Web site, call The Psyience Detectives, which "investigates the mysteries of science and psychic phenomenon."

I don't buy it. That doesn't look big enough to have enough helium to lift a 6-year-old boy. Maybe the balloon took off after the kid fell out (because he was holding it down)? My prediction is this story will change a lot as it develops.

My prediction is the kid accidentally let the balloon fly away, and now he's hiding because he thinks he'll be in trouble for letting it go.

Yep I agree wtih Braden, didn't Mythbusters do a myth on balloons once and they had an aircraft hanger full of balloons and weren't able to get any lift, or something like that???

There was a mythbusters about a lead balloon then did in a hanger that sounds like that. THey were able to make a lead balloon float.

Myth statement
A 4 year old child can be lifted by a bunch of party balloons.

Notes
It would require such a large number of balloons (3,500) to lift an average four-year-old girl of 44 pounds (20 kg) just a few feet off the ground that there is no way the myth could have happened unintentionally.

Or in season 3 with the lawn chair (16 weather balloons)

and 2008 brought the lead balloon

Care to show your work? I'd like to see how you calculated that.

They said the ballon was 20 feet around and 5 feet tall. So its 1570.8 square feet. 1 cubic foot of helium will lift 0.067 pounds x 1570.8 sq feet = 105.24 pounds. This obvoiusly depends on the actual size of the balloon etc..."should" be able to lift a six year old...close anyway.

Hmm...I did mine completely different and got a number in the 80's.

I used volume of a cylinder and figured from there.

How much does an average six year old weigh? Don't forget the basket and balloon material.
