What are these two bugs? Both of them have bodies about 1" long. both of these were in a tree in West Valley, and they killed the tree. This is the tree, not sure what type the tree is

The second pic down looks like a Red-headed ash borer. Not to sure what the first picture is.

You are good. A google search finds like of matches. Sounds like they attack lots of common trees too, so that must have been what killed the tree. That top photo was from the same tree.

My parents had wood boring beetles that killed a lot of trees. I remember once our big cherry tree died, we chopped it up for wood and stacked it under the deck. You could hear the beetles grinding away at the wood. Pretty crazy.

I think they finally got rid of them (not sure how) but over a few years the took out at least a half dozen good trees.

That is good info too. The one tree is a gonner, but the good tree is still there. At least now we know what attacked it. Still don't know what that black and red fly thing is.

Pine Bettles are getting really bad in CO, killing all kinds of pine trees and creating a massive fire hazard.

Probably the natural course of things would be for them to burn so then will re-sead. But that's always messy for a decade or so.
