Ok so I cannot make up my mind on what grill and hood I would like to do. My rig is going to be 53" wide at the dash bar. anyone have any good Ideas on a hood/grill that would work for this? has anyone seen someone cut a jeep hood in half and shrink it down? thus cutting the grill down as well? Anyone have some sweet ideas???? :D

There are fiberglass narrowed hoods and grills available you may want to look into. Liberty and TJ hoods are common. Do you want to mount the hood on hinges so it lifts up, or pins so you can just take it off? There are advantages to each, but you need to think about it before you choose a hood. Look at every vehicle you pass on the road and try to envision how it would look on a tube chassis. Keep in mind that if the hood you choose isn't mounted right (too flat, too sloped, too high, too low, etc.) it will look like ass. The hood will needs to enhance the lines of the chassis, and vice-versa.

I personally love buggies with the landcruiser hood / grille / bezil. plenty have been modified for narrower width and still look good.

Most of the aftermarket fiberglass hoods and grill combos come in 48",50", 54", and 60" widths. I don't know of anybody that makes a 53" hood, but there could be some available. Trent Fabrication, and Twisted Customs both sell 54" Landcruiser hood and grill combos that might work on the 53" width chassis. Twisted Customs also sells a 54" CJ Hood and grill combo. However,I think your idea of narrowing a steel hood and grill would look great if you are up for the task. Plus that might be a lot less expensive option.

I was in the middle of cutting down a TJ hood and grill for my buggy when I sold it. I had them cut down and the grill was all welded back together and the hood was tacked back together. It was actually TONS easier than I thought it would be. I only had maybe an hour or two in to it total. I also cut the grill's back half off so it was just the front inch or so.

do SOMETHING besides a Jeep.......ANYTHING

Its probably just me but I would like to see something completely different.

Back before I decided to just throw money at the Scout I was planning on building a buggy. I was going to tow it with the Scout. It was just on 35s back then.

I bought a Mustang II shell that I was going to use the grill, hood and some of the fenders for the buggy. I made some sketches and it would have been really cool. Just to much work for my lazy ace

:D

Did you just use "Mustang II" and "cool" in the same sentence? Mustang II is the '74-78 Mustang, right?

I've always liked the idea of a non-Jeep, even though the Jeep stuff is just simple and easy to use. That's why on my last buggy I used FJ40 stuff, then when that got crunched enough I replaced it with Nissan Frontier. Part of the reason to choose that one was that the fenders, hood, and grill were easy and cheap to get from Interstate, for replacement purposes.

One thing to look for if you go that route, is a grill that lends itself well to narrowing. On the Nissan one, I just cut the sides off. The hood was flat enough to just cut the sides and not worry about actually sectioning the hood, then the fenders just mounted up with a little trimming. :)

Chad, do what Braden said--try to envision all kinds of cars/trucks/SUV's you see on the road with narrowed stuff. Sometimes the headlights might look cool closer together, sometimes deleting the headlights is the way to go.

I always thought a Nissan Murano would look neat as a buggy hood/grill/fender/headlight combo, but the hood is more shapely so it'd make things harder.

Pic of my old rig....it looked better with the chrome grill I put on later:

LOL Yes I did!

:rofl::rofl:

But this is coming from a guy that drives a Scout so take it for what it worth.

Maybe I will have to start re-thinking the project. It would turn a lot of heads:greg:

Loved Carl's old rig, but I loved my flatty hood and grill more. I had a Mustang grill on my last buggy, to go with the 5.0 motor.
