Once my Toyota is running again, I want to add some Tube to the thing. I'd like your help in which direction I go, so vote and tell me what you think after reading the Pros and Cons of each side.

Exo Pros-
  • Keep sheetmetal & Cab, (Keep cover from crappy weather.)
  • Maintain Street legality.
  • Don't have to trailer it.

Exo Cons-
  • Difficult to engineer & build around sheetmetal.
  • More width & weight.
  • Possibility of smashing Exo, Glass & Sheetmetal in hard roll.
  • 98% of all Exo's look ugly.

Buggy pros-
  • Minimal sheetmetal to damage.
  • Don't have to sweat registration, cops or tickets.
  • Lighter weight.
  • Chance to build a 4 seater!
  • Use the Bender like it's meant to be used.
  • Option of driving any Trail, w/o fear of damage or rolling.

Buggy cons-
  • Not street legal.
  • Lot's of work to do correctly!
  • Need tow rig & trailer.
  • Not 'wet/cold weather' friendly.

I would vote for a buggy but as a ground up project not your current pickup(buy something more beatup if you are just going to cut it up anyway). I think you just need to wheel what you have or you will forget how. It does not even need a roll bar if it never leaves your garage. What has it been now almost a year?

As much as I like being able to drive mine around to and from trails, I'm leaning on making a buggy too. But I'm just too attached to it as it is... I just don't know for sure though.

I voted exo, because I like the way yota's turn out. Take Von's toyota for example. It looks like his yota can take some hits and keep on going.

Better yet. How about you get it running, take it out a few times, then decide. ;) :D

Now when I say "Buggy" I'm just talking about the back half, kinda like Von did.

But like Bob said, you truck is kinda clean, are you ready to hack it up so soon? Waist some sheet metal before you saw zaw..

That's the thing though, my current truck has seen a hard roll and the A-Pillar on the drivers side has been crushed and bent back out. The only straight piece of sheetmetal is the hood. It looks clean, but started as a total beater. I have no problem cutting it up.

It'll be a year in the Fall, your correct. I do want something that I can wheel as hard as I'd like, but I don't want to wait or go thru 3 diffrent stages untill I arrive with the rig I wanted in the first place.

I think I'll go work on my truck now.........

Yeah, his truck is too clean to be hacked up for a buggy.

I think he should make a replica of Von's toyota and tell everybody he is Von. Too bad Greg doesn't look punkish enough.

You should keep the front, and buggy out the back... But do something new with it. Something you haven't seen before, which is hard, but possible.

Sometimes I wish I had a toyota when I look at mine and try to figure how I want to cut it up. Atleast you have a frame to start with. :(

No way... Chop the cab off and replace it w/ Cage. I really would like to add a rear Wrangler seat, so I could haul 4 people. I'd keep the Hood, Grill, and a little of the fenders. It would look like a Toy from the front, but all buisness from the rear.

Diffrent is hard to do these days, but I'll try. I'd like to keep the Roof low and somewhat narrow, taper the rear the same size of the frame, and slant the tailgate area. I'd like to be able to fit a 37" spare, Tools, Parts & the cooler, plus 2 more passengers... It would be difficult, but possible.

Frames are good..... You should eventually swap all your stuff onto a YJ once the XJ is sufficently beat... Coils F & R.... 38's... 108" wheelbase... :D

i voted exo with Von's in mind. his is good looking, and street worthy(isn't it?). i would like to see some rear seats, that's what i was gonna do to a dream toy when i went through my vehicle identity crisis. anyway......get it running.:D

buggy. just do it. imagine the possibilities and creativity that it would allow you. A buggy is the end result, and the natural end of evolving anyway.;)

Not big on the exo. But if you want to go "big" and not worry then that would be my suggestion.

That said I like to drive mine on the street (go to dinner, store or just a short dive),but I trailer it to go wheeling simply for the fact If something goes wrong I only have to worry about getting it back to the trailer, not all the way home.

So Greg, if you decide to go with the buggy are you going to strip it down and start with the frame? Or do you plan on working something out as far a complete tube frame, etc...

More than likely, I use almost all of the stock Frame.

I'd just hack off the A-pillars at the dash and cut the cab off at the floor, in the back. I'd leave the stock floor, and add some sheetmetal in the rear. I'd also trim the rocker panels out and toss some tube in their place.

When I get around to linking up the rear and adding coils, I may cut the frame off at the Coil bucket and add tube from there back.
