Castastrophic Axle Breakage & what to replace it with

So what should I replace it with? Requirements: Same approx width (58"), 5 on 5.5 bolt circle, and uh...that's it I guess.
Another 44 (with trussed housing/tubes) seems to be the local favorite at the moment. I can re-use all the internals. Ford 9" and 60's are in the running too.

Not sure what happened. The casting obviously broke away.....but we never noticed if the tube twisted or not. Marc noticed that the welds in the broken off cast part was about as strong as a bird turd sticking the two parts togather. It didn't happen during a nasty bounce or climb or anything....let loose on a smooth gravel road coasting downhill at 20 mph.

The good: Cheap, Strong, and mini spools are 179$ thorugh reider racing

I went with a Dana 60 in my Scrambler. The axle was free, already had 4:10's. Bought the Warn full float 60 kit, which uses 5x5.5 bolt pattern, 1.5 inch 35 spline axles. Total cost, including a new Detroit & disc brakes, $ 1700.00. If you are staying with the 37's and still want 5x5.5 wheel pattern, this may be the strongest way to go for the money. 
I'll make the suggestion we talked about on the phone public now:
Source another rear Scout 44 for now, just so you can bolt it in and wheel NOW. DO NOT keep it, or plan on that....build a rear 60 or 9". I'll go ahead and vote against the 14bolt, even though I'm sure Brett wants one, as well as receiving votes here....
Build a semifloating 35 spline 5 on 5.5 axle out of either the 60 or the 9--not quite as strong as Turbobob's FF axle, but more than enough for what you do....

OK OK, that is starting to make some sense. Maybe someone here knows the answer to my question on the phone: What is the strength difference between a reverse 60 and a regular 44? And what would I find a reveresed 60 in? (I know, a ford 1 ton ,but all those are being scavenged by front axle swappers. Plus I'd have to re tube it I assume? How does that work?)

Ogre will sell you his 9" rear. 1.5" 35 spline shafts, trussed. About 60" wide.

RC 60's are only found in front axle applications, unfortunately. You would have to retube the short side, the long side will work fine as-is, since it's longer than you'll need for a rear axle.
You can also buy an RC center section aftermarket, if you want to increase your budget.
Dynatrac, Tera, Rockcrusher are three that come to mind right now. Or, on the 9" side, any 9" housing with the "True Hi9" third member.

However it is trussed, and I am also running Superior Chromo shafts.
All in all I also have a full detroit in it, Precision gears, etc.
I love the axle, and if I break it I am going to replace it with the same thing.
There is also a rear disc brake conversion kit you can buy for it also.
Oh and it too is 5 on 5.5
