CB receiving issue

This weekend in CO the cb would broadcast fine and clear but receiving was super crackly. Sometimes it would come through clear but the majority of the time it was so bad you couldn't make out what was being said. Now this was good for talking smack because I couldn't hear what they said back, but I think I should probably fix it Any ideas where to start? The CB is peaked and tuned and has worked awesome until this trip. I do have the antennae on a quick release so it will fit in the garage.

In general, I would say that scenario is a transmitter problem.
That said, some questions:

Was it static such as between stations on the radio or a whine or squeal of some sort?
How far away was the sender?
Was this a problem with anyone else near you listening to the same source?
You said people able to hear you OK? at a distance?

Which radio? It could be your radio's speaker, or possibly too much gain.

if it has an RF GAIN knob... it might be turned down...
