Changing Intake

Just wondered if its a worthless mod to put an aftermarket intake on? Like an Airraid. Just thought maybe I could do one and use my stock box as a storage space for say a bottlejack, spare belt or whatever I can stuff in there.

I dont think that the intake is worthless. Dont know how much power I gained from it, but I did gain a bunch of extra space under the hood. It also lowered my temp.

I gained some fuel economy and also horsepower on my Dodge Pickup that I put a K&N FIPK kit on.

I really like it and it looks really clean under the hood.

Hey Chadr, why did you go with the K&N? I am thinking of doingthe same to my Ram but with the AEM version. Did you loose any low end power?

I didn't seem to lose any low end power that I could really tell. It really opened it up and it sounds awesome when you get off the line. I haven't changed anything on the exhaust yet and I will have to check into any power loss if I finally do, but the boss at home says I don't need to keep doing stuff to her truck.

I went with the K&N because I have gone with them with every vehicle that I have had and have never really had a problem. The installation is very clean and I like their materials that they use. I guess I just get in a RUTT and can't seem to get out of it. I even have one on my ATV.

I found the kit for about $200.00 shipped on Ebay new. I couldn't find it cheaper anywhere else.

I have had a K&N on all my jeeps and been happy. I went with the AEM this time because they have a new oil free filter.

I haven't heard about that one. Oil free would be really sweet. How do you clean them?

They call it a dryflow filter. Look at the site and they have a video clip how you clean it (dunk and soak in water/cleaner, repeat, air dry..no oil)

It should be here in a few days, I'll kick some pics if you like.

IVe heard bad reports on some of the diesel forums about people using the K&N filters on there motors.

I home built my own with an AFE intake, and some Mandrel bent 4" exhaust tubing. I need to build a sheet metal box for it now to keep the heat out of it. It sounds wicked though when you romp on it.

Most people say no on the k/n for diesels. They say they don't filter well and they let dust in the engine and poof, bad engine. Gas isn't supposed to be a problem. Just ordered a afe stage 2 for my superduty today of ebay

Thats exactly what ive read. I wanted the AFE stage 2 for my Superduty as well, but i couldnt justify the price. Id rather put the money towards an exhaust or chip.

On a Jeep 4.0 the performance gains are pretty minimal because the computer isn't really aware of the increased air flow due to the lack of a MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. All the Jeep engine can really see is throttle position, intake temperature (which it is very sensitive to) and vacuum/boost. The computer is tuned to stock parameters, so new stock performance ultimately is about the best you can expect to get w/o modifying the computer, or adding boost. So, unless your stock intake is horribly restrictive you're not going to notice much.

On engines with a MAF sensor you tend to notice better gains once the computer has had a chance to adjust to the new intake and the increased air flow. Unfortunatley Jeep's don't have one.

I've done a lot of experimenting with the 4.0's and really the only thing aside from forced induction (been there, done that, won't do it again) or a stroker upgrade that works is the Edge Trail Jammer kit. The reason it works is because it remaps the computer slightly to take advantage of the increased air flow.

A simple intake or throttle body on it's own doesn't do a whole lot, but the Edge kit combined with the intake, throttle body, and computer module did make a noticeable difference on my Jeep.

FWIW I went to the Edge kit after removing the turbo I had. Initially I went to the turbo because my Jeep was a dog on road and I couldn't stand driving it. I wanted a little more power and there wasn't really anything available that could deliver enough of a power increase to make me happy. The Edge kit works great, after having removed the turbo I figured I'd hate driving my Jeep but the Edge made enough of a difference that I'm happy with it. It doesn't offer anywhere near the power increase that the turbo did, but it's definitely better than stock and it's exactly what I was looking for in the first place. I wasn't after insane power (although I did like it w/ the turbo), and I didn't want to sacrifice driveability. The Edge kit has been 100% reliable so far too, and it offers the same level of driveability as stock, something I couldn't say for the turbo.

The intake does help as far as air flow goes but do it properly. A good intake system allows cool outside air in and keeps the thousand degrees from motor and exhaust out cause we all know that a motor runs better with cold air. the ones that just pop on suck. As far as diesels go afe is the best on a personal and professional level edge as far chips and go with a alumminum exhuast rather than stainless cause Utah SALT sucks!!!!
