A BAD custom job however can be very cheap.
I remember seeing Foose build some 'custom' running boards for a Navigator using rain gutter material.

Well,,, I have been thinking about this post since James posted it. One thing that I think people are looking for when they say cheep is that it is in their budget. So instead of say that they need a custom bumper that works within there budget they ask for custom/cheep.

When I help people out the first thing I ask is what is your budget. If someone is looking at a $200.00 bumper then grab some 1 1/2" and weld some tabs on it.

What really kills me, is when friends think that your tools and supplies didn't cost you anything. That your time is free, that you are sitting home waiting to help. That hurts, really hurts.

Good point. Another point might be that the mechanic field gets a bad rap by all of the shops out there that rip people off, so by someone saying they want it cheap they are just trying to not get ripped off.

I would define "custom" as made for a specific use or application. Does that always mean expensive? I don't see why that has to be the case.

And always remember that "cheap" or "in my budget" means very different things ot different people.

So people come in wanting something for less than what you can do it for. Tell them what it will cost and they can do it, or not. Life is like that in any bussiness- its just with "custom" work you cannot post a price for window shoppers so they have to ask. Where is the big deal?
