I vote get him a toyota pickup.

better mileage
less space for lots of people (distractions)
easier to work on
easier to build
reliabler

although my first 2 vehicles were cherokees and I loved them to death! my buddie's stock toyota could go more places than my cherokee though.

Brett, don't confuse the situation with facts. Your OLD! :D

I'll keep my eyes peeled for a great budget rig. I really do like the attributes of the Samurai and honestly coming from a kid that beat the heck out of his in high school, they are pretty low maintainance, like I had to do very little despite the day to day rigors which seemed to include a Corner Canyon "sluffing" excursion :D

The only downfall of the Samurai is the manual, but I think they are one of the easier ones to learn really?

The search has been expanded to include cherokees, grand cherokees (cuz they are cheap too) yota 4r & pickups, zuk sidekick/trackers and samurais...and yes, samurais are more $$ than XJ's.

So far the best we've seen are the '95 GC on this site, and a red tracker on KSL (just got pics today) I'm a tracker fan, and think it would be a pretty good fit.

Josh just walked by and looked at the GC and the tracker and asked if the GC was any good offroad. He was confusing it with a pathfinder...there was one with us on PSM last summer and it had a hard time, whereas the tracker that was with us did great. I assured him the GC was good offroad (apparently that attribute is more important than he admitted to earlier)

I threatened my daughter for years that she was going to get a Metro...:ugh: So when I bought her this XJ, she was just happy it wasn't a Metro...

After some work on the XJ and having a couple friends over to paint it, she is pleased to be driving this... (Thanks again Brian and Scott!!!!);)

It isn't flashy, it isn't fancy. Her college roomies all drive newer nicer cars, but they LOVE her XJ... And she appreciates all the work we did to get it in this condition.

I was driving it around today and its a nice little rig. Lots of fun on the still slick streets...:D

We went to get the learner's permit. He missed it by a couple questions:
  • How many drinks you can have initially, and then per hour and not be drunk, (3 + 1/hr)
  • when to dim your lights (300'), and
  • how old you have to be to not wear a helmet on a motorcycle. (18)
I would have missed those too (without studying). Dunno if he missed anything else. Mama wants to wait and see if he can handle this driving thing before he gets his own car.

My first was an 89 toy 2wd stick. it was fun but then i talked dad into a 85 4runner 4wd. that was better. it was a good rig, but always made me angry about the 2 doors. so the top was off 3/4ths the year so friends could climb over the tires and get in the rear.

I would recommend an early toy pickup. or post 90' 4runner they clear 31's with no lift and look sweet compared to a stock cherokee! thats what the "cool kids" drove when i was in highschool till they all got durmax's and cummins, rich punks!
and plus jeeps are to common like even barbie drives a jeep!

after a month or so shifting comes natural, i wish my 96 was a manual :/
and yes sami's shift with ease... but toys are pretty easy too.

Good Luck!

oh and another note. my friends 01 cherokee holds the speed record in this down hill then back up road that we call the "dip" and that 4.0L I-6 pulls hard. ive been beaten off the line by a 89 4.0 with over 225k miles. and my 96 with the 3.4L feels like a nascar truck compared to my first 22R and 22RE :)

Depends on what you want, reliability with sacrificing some space and amenities? Or jeep that has more options, and room with less reliability. If all your looking for is a fun little vehicle, with 4wd and don't need space etc... sami or kick, kick 4 door are awesome, then you have all the space that the Cherokee has.

But they are pricey, as far as compared to an old GC or a Cherokee, if you can get a Jeep that's been gone over, sensors replaced, work done it then your golden.

Good reasons for sure. I didn't think about the non-power windows and stuff. Good call.

and also when comparing cherokees to 4runners. the space in the cherokee makes me laugh. 4runner has more than you'd think and for rear cargo space for camping/exploration its great!
