My sister is pissed because I haven't had a checkup since I left the Navy.
It's only been 27 years.
I've had to drive myself to the ER a couple of times and I think thats enough doctors.
A good first aid kit, some tape and superglue fix 99% of injuries:D
And I've also had drug tests for employment.

Good enough.

I just went at the urging of my wife, as I have never been-- but like you I figured regular trips to the ER and the associated scans, pokings, proddings, and questioning should suffice. I am getting some bloodwork next week because the doc is curious how I metabolize pain meds, coupled with a high tolerance for pain, and suspects some kind of "difference from the norm in your liver, no biggie but I'm curious".
My blood pressure is fine, everything else checked out great, blah blah. Waste of a trip I think.

The prostate exam may be worth the trouble though, that's a real nasty way to go.

We're finally leaving New York in the morning. We were supposed to leave Monday but we had to stay in Bermuda another night due to the huge "storm" that closed JFK (Nearly EIGHT WHOLE INCHES OF SNOW! ooooooh!!!). And when we finally got here at 2am we didn't really feel like leaving at 9 the next morning.

I am bringing as much of Bermuda's warmth with me as I can. It is about 8* here right now, at 2am, and it feels a lot colder than that. It was high 60's on the beach. :D

My mom said the same thing and she was a registered nurse:eek:
She also taught me how tape cuts shut:D

if you are never sick and don't do stupid stuff then there is no reason to go... until your about 45 (oh **** I'm almost there) then you need to get your butt swiped just to make sure... would hate to kill over without walking my daughter down the isle...

Besides you really don't want to know what your dieing from... make it a surprise!!! keep the kids guessing when they are going to get some money!

I shouldn't be talking because I haven't been in a decade, but it's not a bad idea. I have a close friend that went into to have a caugh checked out (she thought she had pnemonia) and turned out she had a tumer in her lung the size of a pool ball. Had she gone another month or two, it would have been terminal.

I've been meaning to go get a checkup for a bit now, just keep putting it off.

I went once as kid as a requirement for boy scouts.

I've never had one since, and really don't want to have one. I am the type or person that only goes when I have to, because most items I've just fixed on my own.

I think it really comes down to how healthy you are and what kind of family health history you have. If you take care of yourself, eat right, get plenty of exercise, and are all round a healthy person, I don't see any need to go to the doctor unless you're really sick, or have been sick and just can't seem to shake it. This is also coming from someone who's self employed with no insurance so I may not be the best person to ask. :)

I go every year to get my thyroid checked (Hypothyroid) while I am there they also check my cholesterol ( it's always been just fine, thank you) and what ever else they decide. It only takes one needle no matter how many different blood tests they do.
BP has always been great too.

I believe in a good check up every 3-5 years. I firmly believe everyone in the world come age 50 should have a colonoscopy. Colon cancer is far to common and preventable in 90% of cases have polyps that can be removed before they turn dangerous. Almost everyone has at least a few polyps. Alot of people ignore stomach pain for too long as well leading to gnarly ulcers and esphogus damage. Just sayin.

Bingo!!!

If you're over forty, you need to have the pooper probed.

Not fun, but the alternative is a little worse.

As for check ups, I have two a year. One is just a DOT check up for my engineer's certificate, and then I also do one a year on my own.
(that's when I have my pooper probed)

So I guess I would say you should have one done every year.
