"Clunker" cars at the PicknPull

My son told me I had to get down to the picknpull because the cash for clunker cars are showing up and the were some jeeps to take parts off of. It was depressing to see some of the nice jeeps and trucks our tax dollars destroyed. I took some parts off of a really clean red 90 YJ. There was also a nice red 96 xj and 94,96 and 98 ZJs. Most of the ZJs were nicer than my ZJ. The parts were going fast off of the YJ but there were still alot of good body parts left. So if you can stand the aggrevation of seeing what your tax dollars did there are some nice parts to pick up. The clunkers are just west of the main office.

It was my understanding that the cars had to be crushed??? That only the radiators and one or 2 other parts could be salvaged??

The main requirement was that the dealers had to destroy the engines before sending them off to scrap. I have seen that some dealers in some states have been crushing them but others are just destroying the engine and sending them to salvage. Some of the ones I looked at didn't have that many miles on them so it was a real shame to destroy them. The YJ I got parts off of was a very nice little jeep with no rust and about 100K miles and very clean.

Could the VIN ever make it's way onto a salvage title? Or did they black list those vehicles? Could you make a cheap engine-swapped car from a junker?

As I do more research it looks like the cars all must be crushed or shredded within 6 months and that the recycler can sell whatever he can (excluding any and all drivetrain parts) within that 6 months.

The only thing I saw was that the engines are painted to show that they have been destroyed but they aren't excluding drivetrain parts from being sold. People have also been taking parts off of the motors. They may start the "no drivetrain parts" rule out there if that is what the feds require and someone reports them, but for now it appears that you can buy anything.
