Colorado; Schofield and Kebler Pass

Last weekend we took a 2 day trip into the Colorado mountains. Our drive took us down to Delta, CO, thru Paonia and over the paved McClure Pass and eventually into Marble, CO.

From Marble the real trail fun started... the road is rocky and very narrow, with few spots to pull into in order to let oncoming traffic by. A short time up the trail we came across a guy in a broke down Grand Cherokee... he asked if we could haul his camping gear and daughters to their campsite, a couple miles up the road. We obliged and helped the poor guy out... funny enough, after we loaded up his gear, the Jeep magically started and he drove it into their camp! We unloaded their gear and wished them the best.

We made our way to the town of Crystal and the Crystal Mill Falls... one of the most photographed structures in Colorado. I decided to try my hand with my Olympus... the light wasn't very good, but they turned out OK.

Right after the Crystal Mill, the trail gets real fun... there's even a sign warning you of the dangers ahead! We dropped the Lexus into 4 Low and began the climb up the narrow road, towards the Devils Punchbowl.

The trail was very narrow, with little room for error... and there was a good deal of traffic to get around. There was also a lot of loose rocks that would move under you, combined with enough ledges tossed in to keep your hands firm on the steering wheel.

The motorcyclist you see in the above photo ended up wiping out just ahead in a rocky, ledge-filled section. We rounded a corner and saw him obviously hurt, with his bike pointed the wrong way in the middle of the trail. I jumped out and ran up to him... he said he'd move out of the way in just a minute, thinking we were in a hurry. I asked him if he dropped the bike and if he was OK... he said yes, he wrecked the bike and his knee, ribs and elbow were hurt. I helped him pick things up, move his bike into a better spot and offered any help and told him I rode myself. He said he'd be OK, but would probably turn around. Poor guy... he looked pretty banged up.

We continued on to the bridge and falls, then up another big climb. There was a group of Side by Side's coming down, so I pulled over to let them pass... they were banging & scraping their way down the hill, it was kind of funny to watch them bounce down the sketchy spots!

Eventually we made it to the top and past the difficult, narrow parts. We continued onto the summit of the pass at 10,707 ft and down the other side towards Crested Butte. On the way we passed the beautiful Emerald Lake.

We rounded a corner and found a massive snow drift... at the end of August!! I'd guess the drift was 60 yards long and around 30' deep. Not wanting to take the easy way to Crested Butte and seeing someone in a 4x4 already on the snow drift, we decided to give it a try. As I mentioned, there was a truck that had just climbed up onto the drift. It was a real built, good looking late 90's GM truck. I decided to watch him make his way across... as I got closer, I noticed all the business/sponsor stickers... it was Stephen Watson, from Offroad Design, out of Carbondale, CO! I tried not to distract Stephen too much, but it wasn't easy... :D His GMC has a Vortec 454, NV4500, 1 Ton axles and 40" Goodyears. It's a badass truck and works very well from what I saw!

I figured that if a big full size could make it across and not break thru, my piggy FZJ could make it too. Stephen said he had to air down to 5 PSI to make it up... I had aired down to 15 PSI for the trail and decided to try my current pressure first. At 15 PSI I just spun out... no chance at making it up the initial steep climb to get onto the drift. I decided to drop my tire pressure down to 5 PSI too!

P8200083-Large-X2.jpg

5 PSI and both diff lock engaged! I tried to climb... no go. I tried a small bump... still, no go. Finally I got up a decent amount of momentum and stayed on the throttle, climbing up onto the massive snow drift! Once on top, the rear end wanted to go down hill... I ended up crab-walking across the entire drift sideways, leaning unnervingly towards the valley below.

The hikers were amazed that vehicles could drive over the massive snow drift. Back on the other side of the snow drift, it was time to air back up to 15 PSI. I had packed my Nitrogen tank and hose, but some how left my chuck at home! Stephen was kind enough to let me borrow his chuck so I could air back up to 15 PSI. Huge thanks Stephen!!

After the snow drift, the road got better and we eventually started seeing cars... that was a good sign! Eventually we made our way into Crested Butte... we didn't stop though, we were looking for our campsite for the night. We headed out of town on Kebler Pass, looking for a good dirt road to explore. We stumbled across a nice road that lead us away from Kebler, right down into a nice open field surrounded by massive pine and aspen trees.

We started a fire to cook on, then set up the tent and sleeping gear. There were dark clouds overhead and thunder was echoing off the mountains around us.

We broke out the pie irons and cooked up some Ham & Cheese sandwiches and they were perfect! Something about cooking over an open fire always makes food taste better... they may have tasted so good because we were just that hungry, but whatever it was... we wanted more.

We settled in for the evening and had a few deer wander into our home for the night... too cool. Daisy was watching them so closely, but that was it. She was our guard dog, keeping an eye on our camp site. We stoked the fire and hung out as the temperatures dropped. Around 10 PM it started to lightly rain and we decided to call it a night... falling asleep as the rain fell on the tent. I love camping.

The next morning we cooked breakfast (Bacon, egg & cheese sandwiches), then I decided to try capture the flowers that were in the field...

We packed up camp and hit the road to complete Kebler Pass, with a little photography and fishing along the way. We were fishing at the wrong time of day, but at least Daisy got some use out of the lake.

We returned to pavement at Paonia Reservoir, then continued on down the canyon on the way home. It was a great weekend and the cool mountain temps were a welcome change from the high 90's back home.

What an excellent report, as always. The truck Mr. Watson was driving was the truck they built for this last Ultimate Adventure. I believe it was sporting one of their kits to swap a solid axle into an IFS Chevy. There are a few build up threads on CK5 and Pirate.

Maybe when I get the step side built I will be able to access some of the great areas Colorado has to offer.

Thanks LT! You are correct, I'm sure the truck was loaded with ORD products. We spent some time talking about GM trucks, solid axle swaps and then the fun stuff... building IFS that could handle big tires and gearing. Stephen talked about using a ProRock 60 center section, beefy RCV axles and long travel A-arms... sounded pretty neat, I'd love to see it done.

Bring that step side up this way and I'll be happy to show you around.

Yeah, I kept waiting for the rear to straighten out and it never did. I'm just glad it didn't get worse.

Soon enough, I'm sure! The mountains will still be there. ;)

That looks like an awesome trip! Those sandwich pictures are amazing.:D

:rofl: Best photos of the trip.

The first two pictures are my favorite. That place looks incredible.

Thanks Scott, I think I took about 20 pictures of the mill... those 2 were the best, IMO. It's a beautiful area for sure, hard to take a bad photo, but I tried. :D

Very, very nice!

Thank you!

Thanks Steve, I feel like we haven't been able to get out as much as I'd like. My wife is in school for her Masters degree, plus her full time job. She's not able to get out as much as we have in the past, but we still manage to sneak in a trip here & there.

Here's a build thread to the GMC- http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=285760

I can't imagine how that drift would have looked a month ago! I wouldn't have tried it if Stephen hadn't gone first... he was the guinea pig, I just followed. :D

There were a handful of snowboarders playing on the drift... it didn't look all that fun.

Cool report. Schofield pass is very dangerous. The first bowl as you start up the narrow and steep cliff, has a full size blazer in it. The guy driving the blazer, lived in Crested Butte and had drivin the pass many times. He drove over the pass one day with 5 other adults and 1 boy in the blazer to the town of Crystal. It started to rain so they were heading back over Schofield. The blazer slid off right above the bowl, and some how, the boy got out, but the blazer went off upside down into the bowl. They all died.
From what I have heard, the blazer is still in there, but the bodys were removed, and the bowl is about 35 feet deep. I heard the bowl was called the "Devils Punch Bowl".
The lady that told me this story back in 1986, had a little store right in Crystal, and she knew the guy driving.
My girlfriend and just came down Schofield pass in my stock 1981 Toyota truck, it scared the crap out of me. I don't plan on doing that trail in a rig anytime soon, maybe a quad.
