Compressors

I am looking for a good QUIET shop air compressor. I'd like to stay around $400 if possible. I have a two-year-old and a newborn, and my garage is directly underneath their bedrooms. My current direct-drive compressor works great, but it's too loud to use while the kids are sleeping. This has really been limiting the amount of time I can be working in the shop. So, I'm looking for a compressor that is quiet, and ideally I'd like it to be able to keep up with my plasma cutter. Any advice would be great.

I would go with the 60 Gal to run your plasma... I have used rubber Isolators before and they work "OK" you will just want to check them every so often to make sure that they are not cracking... Go in and listen to it to see how quiet it is...

I don't think any of the stores have them set up to hear, do they?

The Home Depot in Tooele will let me turn on almost anything I want they usually ask what I am doing once I turn it on:).. sometimes I have to cart it to where there is a 220 outlet but they have cool carts for that :)..

The sears is Basically a CH and some of their motors have major pump issues (From my experiance)... I think the Husky would be a decent bet...

remember to change the oil after the break in period though (Seriously it will give it a bit more life :) )

Does Harbor Freight have anything I should seriously look at?

I am in the same boat as you with the loud compressor issue. I am completely sick of my craftsman and I am looking for a replacement. I can say that my 30 gallon 110 can run a 220/30AMP plasma all day long without any issues. Disc sanders are a different story though-_-

The HF stuff is usually warrantied/leftover Campbell or IR. Mostly IR. RedbullTJ bought an super quiet IR 110 oil bath compressor from northern tool(TX) for $600.00 and they had the exact same compressor at HF for $369.00. I just may go with the HF, and grab a warranty for peace of mind.

I have an older Husky 60 gal, mounted on polyurethane bumpstops as feet. You can hear it if you'd like. It's reasonable, far quieter than your current one (just about any belt-drive oil-bath compressor will be), but not as quiet as my ancient Speedaire you used for your floor.

I have the Lowes version of the 60 gal husky. It puts out enough air to run my sandblaster/air sander/etc but isnt very quiet. (although it is much quieter than the one you currently have) Of all the ones you posted the IR is probably the best followed by the husky 60 gal. You are welcome to come by and listen to mine if you want.

I will probably come by and listen to your Husky. How do you have it mounted?

Had I been smart.......

Last year I built a really nice shed. Complete with lights, power, ect. I put my drill press in there to save on garage space. I don't use it often, but when ya need it ya need it. Anyways, had I been thinking, I would have run a 220V line out there, and stuck my compressor in there as well. Then just run a copper line into the garage. Maybe an option, if you've got a shed anyway?

There is a shed on our landscape plan, right behind the garage... I will probably put the compressor in there when we build it, but that probably wont be for a year or two. Really good thought though.

I recently got a Craftsman 110 30 gal, and was amazed at how quiet it is. My dad got a couple of their 17 gal 110's that they were closing out for $70 a few months back and they power the plasma just fine. The motor on the 60 looks bigger though, and I would guess a bit louder.

I agree with just going around to stores and turning them on to test them.
