Computer A/V nerds......help a whitey out

So, yesterday I picked up a new TV, a Toshiba 42HL67, and plugged it into my computer via the VGA terminal. I'd already ordered a DVI to HDMI cable, which arrived today. Problem is that I can't anything to display on the TV using the DVI out on my computer. Video card is a GeForce FX5200, a little older, but should work without a problem.

The video card detects the TV and show's it in the Nvidia settings, but nothing on the screen. I've googled everything I can think of on this. Anyone have a clue as to where to look or any ideas to try? I did download the most up to date drivers for my card as well.......

TV:
Toshiba 42" LCD model 42HL67

Video card
Nvidia GeForce FX 5200

Thanks for any ideas.

So the computer sees the TV but the TV doesn't find a signal from the computer? Have you tried rebooting after you have had the DVI plugged in? Check "Extend Desktop", etc...?

You might have to set the input on the TV to use DVI, but I'm not sure about yours.

Yeah, exactly. I can hit "detect" in the Nvidia settings and it shows it, but not the opposite.

Tried rebotting a few times, with the VGA cable undone, plugged in, all that jazz. I have the setting as "Clone" not extend desktop.....?

From everything I've read in the manual, I should just be able to plug right in and go....too bad that's not really the case so far.

Any other ideas? :(

try changing the resolution to the lowest settings. Also, try doing a "extended desktop" to the TV monitor.

I'll try the resolution, but I think that it's not getting a signal period. If I have the VGA running and use anything but the recommended resolution, I get a "Unsupported Video Signal" on the TV.....figure it'd be the same on HDMI.

What's extended desktop do? Isn't that if I wanted to use two monitors at once (which I don't)?

Are you remaining with the TV on PC input in it's settings, or does it have an HDMI under the PC plugins...

There has to be some little setting that you are missing. Could also be a resolution issue, if your card is putting out a higher resolution than the TV is capable of displaying it will not work. Analog is different, the TV will scale an analog signal.

If you TV is 720, set your resolution to 1280x720. If you are 1080, try 1920x1080

DVI = HDMI - Audio. It's a direct conversion so I'm willing to bet there are no problems between the connection.

It's running on 1280x720 right now, as that's the highest the RGB port can take. Switch to HDMI and there's nothing there.
