It's back on topic again......Sheesh......KURT!!!......It's hijacked :D :D :D

I like the rectangle dimensions as discussed previously by the 'EZRhino' representative and as quoted above by Kurt. It might need to be adjusted to fit the text.....

so does this mean we are using the 3/8 plate I offered? If so, lets wait on the size until Ocnorb gets the material, and he can advise us.

What are the rough dimensions of your plate?

What method of plasma cut did we settle on? Were we going to layer the cut piece over a solid one? So do we need to plates per sign?

(I'm gonna go sort through 195 posts and answer this one... :D)

40x30. It has a funny clipped corner, so if we made two signs out of it, one could be 20x35 and the other 20x30. I suggest having just straight line letters cut through it, instead of layers.

Here is the proposed construction idea as per OCNORB:

Just and idea- I could cut the lettering out of a piece of 1/8" steel. ( I have a piece I will donate) This would be welded to a piece of 1/4 or 3/8"plate, painted white on one side. Weld it around the edges and throw in a couple of rossette welds away from the letters, let it rust and you have a 'BLM' brown sign that is easily read and fairly tolerant of bullets. Every couple of years someone could take a small paintbrush to the letters to renew them.

I like this idea and it seems not only pratical but durable and fairly easy to make...

So at LEAST... we will need a 1/8" plate and a 3/8" plate for each sign, not to mention the poles to attatch them to.

Anyone have some good pipe they could donate? I may be able to score some fire sprinkler pipe (non-cast, 6" in diameter)

Also, this is more for the installation crew... are we going to want to have the sign attatched to the pole before we install it? Or install the pole and then mount the sign?

Cement? who had some to donate? Who can score a portable cement mixer?

Straight cut letters would work great if we use two poles per sign, otherwise, one pole running behind the sign will make the letters hard to rear.... any ideas on this?

I think this process will require the letters to be a little larger than if just cut through the 3/8, which would increase the size of the sign. Let's wait till Ocnorb gets the material, and then he can advise us. I'm sure he knows better than us the capabilities of his equipment.

Good point. We may need two post anyway because of the size of the sign.

Yup, one of the key design spec that this sign must have is durability.... we'll see when the resident expert shows up.

Regarding size:

We don't want it too big and obnoxious. The bigger it is the more likely the BLM won't like it. Also the more attention it will attract and possibly more abuse.

I am for a one post system rather than two (simplicity)! We don't need a cement mixer you knob! All we need is a wheelbarrow and a hoe!

Somebody go over to Wasatch Steel, tell em what we are doing and see if they will donate a length of pipe. I guess we need what, about 6 feet per sign? 2 feet in the ground and 4 feet above?

EZ

i'm asuming only two posts!! RIGHT? prefer round or square?
i personally think square would be easier to attach a flat sign to!
i work by wasatch, i'll stop by and see what they can do! also if that fails i have another sorce!
one other thing to think about is if you can actually dig that deep!! we have done many T post fences in that kind of stuff and usuelly you will get about 6" and hit solid rock!!!...not a big problem, but it might take a little trial and error to find a place for your signs!

as far a supplies i'm willing to buy the cement!!

(SOMEBODY!! Decide on a hole size, do a few calculations, and find out how much is needed!!)

tell me how much and what you want and i'll get it!

I've got two bags of bag cement........I've even mixed the cement in the hole for the sign MANY TIMES while I worked on the farm. Wheelbarrow, cement mixers are not necessary.

Hey duffman,

You are right about the depth. It could be hard to dig that deep, will take some trial and error.

A normal sized post could be secured good with 1 bag of pre mix. 2 would be....well.........almost too much. Let's say, indestructo.

See what you can scare up Ollie and report back to us...

Looks like MBryson has us covered on the cement and EZRhino has us covered on digging the hole.

Get off my thread pad boy.... what team are you on? Installation?

We need to set a date to accomplish this...

What about Saturday, Sept 20th just before the Earth Day Cleanup? That way we can get the car out of there and possibly fix the trail before posting a sign?

We need to get this done quick but not be sloppy about it... I think the 20th gives us ample time to get it done? Possiblt later depending on the plasma cutting, etc.
Thoughts?

Input, for what it's worth. Two layer sign, with the letters cut out of the top layer, and painted white, on a contrasting black background. I would be happy to do all the welding, also I would do a single post (made of big thick pipe) welded to the sign before installation. Dig the hole, then fill it, and the pipe, with concrete.
