So long as you lock your weapons up and they are not in your immediate reach you have a good chance of having no problems as a visitor. Depends on the offiecer/circumstances. If its for an extended period there are additional steps they want you to take, like registering all your firearms (at $25 a piece), and providing proof of containment (lockable container for safety).
I am in San Francisco right now for work and brought a S&W Governor with me. As I read their laws I quickly found out I'd made a mistake. Any gun like the governor is classed as an assault weapon by CA code (shoots shotshells w/a revolving cylinder) so I took it back to UT.
There are a lot of people here under a lot of financial stress. That leads to very poor decision making. Just this morning there was a shooting fatality just a few blocks from my job site in Bayview.
I have a gun here that is CA compliant. I won't risk the personal carry, but if the need arises I'll let the courts decide the rest.
