Converting Colman Stove Fuel - Ideas?

I picked up this really neat old stove/chuck box combo that was apparently made in the 70's. The only downfall is the fuel source as it is setup to use the replaceable Coleman 6.5oz LPG canisters that have been discontinued (outlawed) for 15+ years. There used to be a company out of Florida (camppro.com) that made a conversion adapter to use the 1lb replaceable propane bottles we are all used to now, sadly they are out of business and I can't find anything similar :(

Here is the old fuel canister, Coleman, Hank Roberts, Optimus and others used to make them:

This is what I want to convert it to:

I may be able to steal the fitting and the tube all the way to the burners from a newer stove and implement it onto my old stove, I'll have to figure out if the fittings are remotely the same or workable on the other side.

Thoughts?

Would this work, it's to convert a 2 burner coleman to propane.

http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___86801

It might... I stumbled across that last night. I've got 2-3 different connection point options for my conversion, one right at the burner, other at the on/off valve and then the actual bottle junction.

The easiest would be finding a bottle to metal tube (gas line) adapter as this has some small (~1/4") line running from the valve to the burner. I'll work on some pics :D

Picked up one of these from Sportsmans today, it might just do the trick. I had to slightly file down the end of the assembly to fit into my burner tube, but it works.

The flame is not very "stove" like, its basically just an open flame pouring out of the burners, workable but I don't think its go the correct orfice or regulator setup? I might continue my search before I modify the stove for good.

Thanks again!

That worked

Went to Sportsmans with the intent of picking up that fitting you posted, instead they had the propane regulator for ~$10. I had to modify it a bit, bend the tube carefully as to not kink it. With some other slight modifications to the old stove, I'm in business. Here she is:

That's a pretty cool little stove. Does it work OK in the wind?

Probably not :D I did cook in a pretty windy night last weekend, it worked but I think it burned far more fuel than it should have. This all started when a group of us decided to host a "Relic Run" this summer. All the vehicles, camp gear and even clothing need to be 70's vintage as best as possible. So far we have a half dozen committed attendees in Rovers, Scouts and Land Cruisers. While the upgrades to the vehicles might be stretching it, we are trying our best in other aspects, camp gear being one of them. I've been hitting up the thrift stores and re-furbing some old Coleman appliances I already had (two 50's era lanterns and a 70's era stove. When I saw the KampKitchn pop up for sale online I was all over it, I figured it would be neat for the Relic Run and then I would sell it down the road. Turns out I like it more than I thought I would and its proven quite practical. What you don't see on the other side is some shelf, some plates built out of the same aluminum, a set of coffee mugs and a coffee kettle. I've been adding utinsils and I'm looking for a small pot and frying pan to store with it too. Yes, this is my Friday night highlight Cody. ;)

Good work

That last picture looks like it has a ladder to one of those sissy roof top tents though:rofl::rofl:

Oh i get it now. I was wondering what all the work was trying to get that old stove to work. 70s era run that sounds like a lot of fun.

Thats the excuse anyways. The truth is I like old things, old tools, old bikes, old cars, etc. I'd rather spend $40 fixing something I could replace for $20 :D In reality once fixed these will last far longer than the "throw-away" stuff on the market today. I'll stock up on rebuild parts and that should last me clear through the global warming and cooling phases of earth. ;)

Update on the Kamp Kitchn. I use it on every trip now, the thing just rocks, its probably cooked well over a hundred meals now with no signs of slowing. I keep 100% of my cooking goods sans fuel in the box. I went tupperware shopping (yes Cody that was a Friday night too) and was able to find containers to fit in nearly each of the shelves, keeping all my silverware, spices, etc dust free and easy to organize and re-stock. I was a bit worried about it getting beat up so I've got a local sew shop building me a heavy duty bag with handles on it. I'll post up some pics when they get it finished up.

Kurt et al, Just ran onto this. I have my original 2 burner Coleman stove, lantern, and propane adapters I bought back in the 60's and they still work. It even has the original folding aluminum stand. Wish I had my old Scout back.

I scored on a late Christmas present, a second Kamp Kitchn. It popped up for sale on Craigslist in North Carolina and I just couldn't pass on an opportunity to snatch it up. He didn't want to ship but I was able to send him a UPS shipping label to make it as easy as possible for him.

Here it is:

I plan to build this one to replace my dry food box, so while KK#1 has all my utinsils, stove, bowls, plates, cups, coffee pot, spices, etc, this one will have a 'pantry' of dry food and my hopes are to convert the stove into a griddle. I've got a thread on ExPo going about the griddle choices. Trying to find a commercially available option to modify to the stove but worst case I'll build one to fit. The plan is KK#1 will come along on all trips as usual, KK#2 would only be needed if we plan to do a lot of cooking. In this past year I've done enough meals where we just didn't have enough stove and having a griddle would really open up my cooking options on top of the 2 burner. I'll updated with some pics when it arrives. I've first got to re-do the propane similar to the setup I did for KK#1
