My son and I decided to go out yesterday and do some rockhounding and wheeling out on the Dugway range. We first started at the geode beds and after digging up a bunch we went wheeling up to some of the old mines in the area. We also hit some of the side trails on the way back along the pony express trail. Most of the trails were mellow but a few of the old mine trails where fun. On the way home we saw a herd of wild horses which we haven't seen out there for a while. The antelope were also out along the ride. As we approached Simpson Springs coming home my son stopped for a break at the parking area at the pony express station. When I got out the MJ was pouring oil out all over so I had him turn it off quickly. When we popped the hood we knew we were in trouble. The right side motor mounting bracket had busted in half and the motor tipped and puctured the oil filter on the bracket that holds the motor mount to the unibody. So we were out in the desert busted down with no cell phone. What was amazing to me was how many people ended up helping us out. The first guy that stopped let me use his cell phone but there was no service. Another guy pulled up and asked us what was wrong and his phone wouldn't work either. Then the scouts showed up for a big district campout that they were holding. They offered us food and one of their leaders drove me back almost to Lookout Pass where his phone finally got service. I was then able to call my son in law and fellow RMEr (Guther66) and tell him where to find all of the parts we needed in the basement.
The scout leader then drove me back where my son and I got to wait. One fellow who was camping at Simpson Springs came down and offered us dinner if we needed it and others kept stopping to see if we needed help.
Our rescue team showed up late and we were able to fix everything, clean up the spill and make it home a bit after 1AM. As we were fixing it the ranger showed up and his main concern was how long we were going to leave the jeep in the parking lot. He told us we would have to call the sherrif if we were going to leave it longer than 8 hours. He was the only one who stopped who didn't offer any help.
Here are a few picture of our adventure.
