so ive been looking at jeep wranglers latly and im really trying to find one with a D44. it will be a daily driver and wheeled ocasionally. but my dad is telling me that if i buy a jeep with a D35 it will handle 35's just fine. can anyone give me any insight on wat the main differences between the two axles are besides the whole c-clip on the D35 thing, and if a D35 will hold 35" tires. stuff like that.
thnx,
joel

Dana 35 non c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube
Dana 35 c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube
Chrysler 8.25 - 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube
Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube
Dana 44 non c-clip - 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" axle tube

Taken from jeep forum .com.

Depends on how hard you wheel and how hard you are on the gas on the street. I wouldn't have a dana 35 and 35's under my rig. Even if it was unlocked. With a 44 35's would be good unless you lock it and drive like I do on the road.

which vehicles have the non c-clip Dana 35?

Older YJ's had 'em (like '87 vintage).

I wouldn't run a D35 with anything over 32"-ish tires, personally--at least not on anything I intend on taking offroad at all.

Ask Rockmonkey about him breaking a D35 shaft pulling into the Denny's parking lot. :D

older ones...the first D35s were the non-clip ones. I don't know the approx years though...

I would barely trust a D35 with 35s for street driving let alone for wheeling...

No, a Dana 35 is not enough axle for 35" tires. I broke my first (of several) Dana 35 axle in a parking lot with 33 inch tires. It had stock gears and no locker. A Dana 44 will probably be enough for 35s, depending on how hard you wheel, and how the axle is set up. I'll be putting a 44 under my TJ with 33s and a four cylinder.

thnx for the info guys. ill just have to see wat i get. if i do buy one with a dana 35 i think i might consider putting a dana 60 or a unimog axle under it. but being a poor high school student it might be kinda hard haha

I ran mine with 33" SSR's and ALWAYS waited to hear it break. I carried a complete axle assembly with me on longer trips for spare parts.

Housings are known to be questionable at best. I'd worry about bending it with the 35" tires. Axles are kinda easy to bust.

i had a 35 on my 98 wrangler when i bought it, it had already been replaced once(you could still see the yellow junkyard paint on it) I ran 35's for awhile- i was frightened everytime i went out, but never broke it... I have since switched to a 44 and 37's and have broken 1 axle so far.

I managed to get my 44 off of ebay for a good price- so maybe thats an option :)

I think it was actually Dee's. :D

I get it.....you were in such a hurry to see your favorite transvestite server, that you had the throttle pinned as you pulled into the parking lot. That'd put a lot of stress on any axle. :greg:

Oh geezzzzz.. you must be talking about the one on 7th and 21st. I was surprized one night when a guy in a skirt servered my dinner. Never wanted to eat there since.
