You have more than that in it. It's just a fact. I had to honestly add up the costs of my 715 build. It is at an even $4300 right now, but that's nearly complete. Another $2500 (!!!!) for the rims/tires, and probably another $2000 for the cage and other tubework... I can live with that, and it's all custom. And that cost is all inclusive, too. Under $10k for something unique, capable, and bombproof. And huge...:(

If I was smarter, I'd have started with a TJ or something and stuck with smaller tires LOL.

The Blazer on the other hand, will do well and I'll have less than $2k into it... but I didn't pay anything for the vehicle itself, those are just the upgrades, mostly the 60/14bolt and their associated parts.

Shhhh...... I'll add it up. (hose clamps and other things will be hard to account for).

I wish I had a 60 and a 14 bolt :( (then I could probably leave the spares at home):D

That's the goal. They called my XJ "The Toolshed", but I used every tool and every spare part pretty regularly. I'm hoping that's not the case with the YJ.

Ford 8.8 is just as strong as a D60 and stronger than a D44.
I found the numbers!

COT: Continuous output torque rating
MOT: Maximum output torque rating
Numbers from January edition of Fourwheeler, page 60.

Dana 35 rear axle COT: 870 MOT: 3480
Dana 44 rear axle COT: 1100 MOT: 4460
Ford 8.8 28spline COT: 1250 MOT: 4600
Ford 8.8 31spline COT: 1360 MOT: 5100
Dana60 semifloat COT: 1500 MOT: 5500

So I was a little off.. But not by much!

Just curious about the numbers for an 8.25 axle..... They have those? (I haven't read FourWheeler for YEARS) That's just axles, though, not the whole package.

(and if I were paying someone to mount brackets on a TJ or other linked vehicle rear, I'd just go for something I'd never have to worry about again....it wouldn't be a semi-float 60 either. I'd upgrade from a D35 to a TJ D44 (assuming 35" tires or under) or pay for an actual axle upgrade and reliability (with bigger tires or hard use)--D60/D60.)

Leaf spring, where all you have to worry about is perches and shock mounts is a different story.

How is it that a 28 spline axle is stronger than a 30 spline one? Is the diameter actually larger but with coarser splines?

Good call...Not sure how. Maybe because the 8.8 case/carrier is stronger than a D44? And it's not the actual axle that is stronger?

I would think the C8.25 is every bit as strong as a D44, JMO. And I believe those numbers are the entire axle assembly - housing, axles, gears, carriers, pinion, etc. Because I remember seeing different numbers for just shafts.

all i know about the 8.25 is that i ran 33's on it for 1.5 years and 35's for half a year and didn't have any issues at all. I beat down on that axle and drove it hard. If you are an xj owner, its a huge upgrade over the 35... and obviously for a tj it wouldn't be cost effective at all to throw that in. Only the 97+ 8.25 axles... they are 29 spline instead of the older models which are 27.
