I need your help. I have a pretty capable 4runner that I use as a daily driver. I have a chance to buy a little car that will double my gas milege. I trailer the 4runner on trips anyway. My question is should I get the car and go off road only on the runner or keep it legal (pushing the legal limits) and drivable on the streets? has any one does this do you have any regrets? thanks for your input.

that entirely depends on you. what kind of wheelin do you do?

If you enjoy the hardcore trails more than the long expedition type trails, then getting rid of all the crap that you have to use to be street legal is a good thing.

If you like to do long distance stuff, put around in the mountains, etc etc then it would be dumb to cut up a usable rig.

So buy the commuter car, and set the runner up for the type of wheelin you enjoy.

Good advice, IMHO.

Buy the commuter car either way.

I'm keeping my 4runner streetable, because it's really hard to go back once you start cutting.

Bingo. And what happens if the little car needs some downtime? It's always nice to have another vehicle you can actually drive.

he's saying you're the only person that knows if you should do that or not. If you already have a tow rig, then you already have a secondary mode of transportation in case your car breaks down which means it won't really kill you to have a trail only rig--unless you like to do trails that aren't practical to have such a rig for or don't like the idea of having to trailer the thing to every trail and leaving the tow rig at a fixed point that you have to return to at the end of the day.

Just know, that once you cut it up, you now have to trailer it everywhere and deal with not having as much room to bring people/things with you on the trail.

I miss my buggy, but I wouldn't cut up my current rig. I need/want a 2 rig system. I need one rig to thrash and one rig to do long range camping/expedition type wheelin. I enjoy both equally and it's impossible for me to build a rig that can satisfy both needs. The things that make a rig good for one, make it bad for the other so there is no compromise.

but he said he trailers the runner anyway, which would lead us to surmise that he has a tow rig, which would be a secondary mode of transportation should his commuter go down.

I say buggy the 4runner only as much as needed... Keep as much sheetmetal as you can so it's not one of those, "is that a mini-truck or a 4runner?" situations... I like to know what a rig is ;).. that's probably just me though..

Maybe roll it a few times, and see how you feel then.. :D
