sounds pretty anti mormon to me.. makes mormons sound like cold blooded killers..

It's an entertaining story, doubt it's got much wieght to it though.

Corey, where did you find the two explanations of possible scenarios for the canyon recieving it's name?

lol, you have to be kidding me. Porter Rockwell is a pretty well known figure in Utah and Mormon history. You didn't know that? Perhaps you should do some research about your own history.

Mentioning his name isn't any more anti mormon than mentioning the mountain meadows massacre and it certainly doesn't make "mormons" out to be "cold blooded killers" any more than the crusades make catholics look that way.

Seemed pretty believable to me. After all, wasn't someone stealing someone elses livestock punishable by death back then anyways?

it's not like Porter Rockwell had a reputation for being a big softy. Look at the guy, he's crazy. He's honestly the only person I've seen pictures of that actually "looks" like he's crazy. They called him the 'Destroying Angel' for a reason.

it's They called him the 'Destroying Angel' for a reason.

Porter Rockwell is my favorite dude from LDS church history. Of course, he's not someone who gets a lot of face time in Sunday School. You have to seek out his stories, but he was a bad-a.

Check out Porter's Place on Main Street in Lehi.

That is an awesome picture. The worlds largest comb-over, plus he does look crazy. Almost makes me want to convert

Call em like I see em on this one. There was a lot of very questionable stuff that went on in the history of the LDS church. Did you ever ponder what made Brigham stop at the overlook to a desert wasteland and say "This is the place!" (maps to old gold mines?") And how about the fact that the church was near bankruptcy by todays terms when they came into the valley, yet a few years later they were minting solid gold coins in multiple denominations? And what about the idea of the church standing off against the entire US Army, preparing for a full out battle? There are a lot of documents and relics that the lds church keeps under extremely tight wraps, and they have made more than a few millionares if you are lucky enough to find some "plates" in the area.
Not saying any of this is good or bad, but its history, documented and verified. Porter was a badass and basically an assassin for the church to eliminate any threat to the new organization.

Porter a badass... agreed! I have a replica pistol that he carried. Well, sorta. He usually carried two Colt Navys (among many other firearms)... My replica is, i believe a Colt Army? Anyways they're close enough ;)..

oops as to where I got the storys from.. the indian one came from BYU library, I have a friend who works down there. The Porter story came from Uof U library, old newspaper accounts, Harpers Bazaar, Lost Treasure Magazine, and three different books, two of them documenting indian history in the state. One of which was a history of Wakara and his life and times, as related by a relative in late 1800s. Book was published in 1884.
I mean if you really want to get into Mormon bashing, take a look at how they treated the Indians... whew, theres a whole different story.

If the church doesn't explicitly teach this, it isn't true. Only what the church said happened actually happened. ;)

lol.

Hmm, i must've missed that gospel book.. ;) while it's not taught in church, since it's not part of the gospel, it's not hard to find church history and read. I had about two years to soak in all sorts of old church history books :)
