General Tech Degreaser - how would you clean this?

My recently pulled transmission looks like this. In the past, nothing has really provided a good result without a ton of time/effort.

Gasoline has always been effective, although I know it’s frowned upon to use as a cleaning agent.

As far as commercially available products, for cleaning a really grimy transmission like that I have had great results with Gunk's Foaming Engine Degreaser.

Purple Power and aluminum are NOT good bedfellows as Stag has found out. I've seen Purple Power trash a nice anodized dressed engine of a buddy so I avoid that like the plague.

Yeah, back when I had my buggy and after a roll, I had some oil and ATF all over the thing. Used Purple Power to degrease it and regretted it. Everything that was aluminum, raw or anodized had a bad reaction like Stag said. I would say simple green, and some elbow grease. Bonus points if you have a heated pressure washer. Those help a TON!

EDIT: As Mike also said.

I've got this scrubber deal that looks like a toilet bowl scrubber that goes in a drill. I blast it with degreaser and pressure washer and spin it with this deal and it works so good to loosen it up then Pressure wash it again.

Thanks all! I too have used Purple Power with mixed results. Also experienced the bad reaction with aluminum.

I don’t have a pressure washer, I’m always Leary of pressure washing stuff like this with the fear of getting water in it. But I know it’s a tried and true method.

I’ve also tried several foaming degreasers, gel degreasers, etc. I haven’t tried just a wash with Dawn, but I might give it a whirl.

Get a bottle of Zep industrial purple degreaser from Home Depot. Brush it on liberally without diluting. Wait 10. Repeat, then use some kind of brush to agitate it. Then pressure wash it off. If you have a pressure washer that can take chemicals, use the purple with that.

I'm gonna say that's the inside of a brake rotor--so she blew a seal?

She totally blew a seal. Hard core.

It had been replaced by the previous owner's repair shop, but they didn't clean the seal surface on the spindle and it destroyed that seal. I've spent all of today cleaning those hubs and rotors.

I've hauled engines, transmissions & t-cases to the local car wash and pressure washed them there.

If they're real bad, I'll hit them with a couple cans of degreaser before heading to the car wash to loosen up the crud, then spray Simple Green after the pressure washer has cleaned most of it up. Simple Green is environmentally friendly, so it isn't bad to wash down the drain.... and it works great.

Far as pressure washing parts, just avoid any places that will let water by, seals, breathers, etc. I've had great luck cleaning up nasty drivetrain parts at the car wash.

Best thing I did was build a heavy duty hitch carrier with tie down points. Makes it easier to load transmissions & t-cases and better access when spraying them off at the car wash. :D

Purple power all the way. I mean, its a transmission, not a nice aluminum intake or set of shiny wheels...
Soak it down and then soak it down 10 more times. Grab a scraper or a steel brush if its caked on thick in spots but I just did one on Monday that looked just like yours.
Just soaked it for a while without letting it dry. Just kept spraying it on and as soon as it starts to dry hit it again. And then I took it to the car wash. It was sitting on my trailer and dragging out the pressure washer and hoses seemed way more of a pain than just driving 2 blocks to the car wash. $2.50 later it looked great...

I used simple green concentrate on my engine and it did nothing. I like the sound of this purple power stuff.
