I can't believe I'm going to write this now, instead of getting a nap....

Photos will come later, I took some, but Greg took a bunch.

I left for the campsite around 2pm friday after finding out that 1/4 elliptic wasn't going to make it, then when I called shawn around 4pm, it sounded unlikely he'd make it out. I was a bit bummed, but was not about to turn around. Got to the area, found a reasonable campsite, and started unloading. Barely 10 minutes later, Bobdog shows up. I was glad to see him, meant I wouldn't have to hang out in camp by myself until bedtime.

Saturday
Bobdog and I got up with the sun, did a little chow, then headed out for some exploration. Most of what we looked at were simply trails that any 4x4 could do (I did most of it in 2wd). These trails are all of the trails heading east from the main road from the pass to just above the quarry. By the time we got to the quarry (to the east of the main road, at the southern end of the eastern ridgeline), it was just about 10am so we headed back to the camp to meet up with whoever else was coming out.

We barely got to the camp when up pulls Greg and his roommate and right behind them WayneXJ. Not too far behind them came Muleskinner and his family, Samizook and his wife and Skinner's neighbor Bob (Blue Yota).

We were getting a bit organized when Fergesor pulls in. We were glad to see him, since he knew the area and nobody else did! After everyone got organized and Ferg did some quick maintenance on his rig, we took off for the southern end of the valley.

Ferg showed us the extreme trail that includes Anarchy Alley. He showed us 3 or 4 hardcore obstacles, plus the alley. Myself, WayneXJ, Samizook, Muleskinner and Ferg all attempted the first obstacle. It starts out with a nice sami-eating hole, with a right hand turn up a wide crack (wide enough to drive through without too much trouble). Ferg walked it and made it look pretty easy, Wayne XJ pretty much walked it, with just a broken d-side rear taillight, Muleskinner made it look pretty easy, but took a rock in his d-side rear quarter, Samizook took some bumper damage, and for lack of a front locker, had to back off of it. I was quite nervous seeing all of the body damage in front of me, but I gave it a shot. Thanks to all for the spot, I made it through with just a scrape on my d-side front flare.

After the sami-eating hole, up the crack and a hard left over a ledge takes you to the next obstacle. A very sick, steep slickrock that is no friend to short wheelbases. The obstacle is in a couple of stages. the really steep part is first, then an option to go left or right around a tree. Ferg plays around on the lower steep, gets a bit of a wheelstand, but with a bit of a tug on a strap, makes it clean. He opts to go left around the tree over a 4-5 ft ledge. He pulls his slipshaft from his front driveline and has to do repairs in place. Something got bent, so he couldn't re-assemble it and ended up removing it completely. He was no longer capable of 4wd and wouldn't take any more obstacles for the day.

WayneXJ rolls up to the bottom while ferg is working on his rig, and again, with the help of a strap, comes over the steep. Since Ferg is working on his rig, WayneXJ opts to go right around the tree. While negotiating a not too difficult obstacle, a rock jumps out of the trail and completely takes out his p-side taillight. Gotta watch out for those kamakaze rocks!

I gave the steep a shot, but with my stock TJ wheelbase, even with a strap, it just felt wrong. I didn't want to try and bump it too much, although that may have got me over the steep. It may have also gotten me over on my head!! I backed off to come back later when I have a better cage.

Skinner takes a strap and makes it without any real difficulty. I believe he gave an assist to ferg when it was time for him to come around the right side of the tree in 2wd.

On to the next obstacle. Ferg takes us down the trail a bit, and pulls off next to a slickrock ramp. He gets out and starts walking up the ramp, and Skinner, WayneXJ, Me and Greg's Roommate Zach start following in our rigs. Didn't take long before skinner stops and decides to take a look on foot first. This is one insane obstacle that starts out with a breakover rock directly into a very steep (but short) climb. The steep is not pretty with an almost vertical face for the first 2' or so, then it reduces to a mere 80* climb for about 6 more feet. On either side of the steep is a bad spot for a roll, so all 3 that went up it took a strap on the front and 4-6 guys tugging on it.

Skinner was first and went over the breakover rock with barely a scrape. We had to stack a couple of rocks at the base of the steep after a couple of attempts that sent him sliding to the right. That is also when we broke out the strap. He drove and we pulled and up he came. He moved to the side to give WayneXJ space, and provide vehicular strap assistance if necessary.

A couple of nicely stacked rocks got wayne over the breakover, then the strap team hooked him up and got him over the steep.

With my baby 33s, I knew the breakover was going to be tough, but thanks to all for spotting me and the excellent placement of rocks. The strap team pulled me up the steep and I was ready for the next part of the obstacle.

The second part of the obstacle is as intimidating as the first. after crossing a crack with massive articulation, you have to drive along a crack that could send you way off camber (p-side high) if not for a nice little ridge of rock that you run your driver side tires over. You follow the rocks with your drivers side, then the d-side starts climbing and the p-side starts dropping. Now you are off camber the other way. A few strategically placed rocks get the p-side front up to a reasonable level while the d-side is still climbing. All of this while turning up to the left. As you climb, the front d-side is about 4-5' higher than the rear p-side. Those strategicly placed rocks gets the p-side front up high enough so you don't roll if you are smooth. Once the fronts are up, you have to bump it to get the rears over. This is a very intimidating move. You are way off camber (d-side high), turning to the d-side, rear p-side is in a hole (or maybe on one of those rocks) and you have to give it a bump....WOW!!

I think the strap was used again for all 3 rigs with the strap team giving some assistance. I know I needed the comfort of the strap, although if you weren't worried about a roll, there are probably plenty of rigs that could make it.

We took a quick drive around to look at anarchy alley, then headed back to camp. When we pulled up, there was spence, Wanker Delux and Spence's friend James (not sure if he is on RME). The wind had really picked up, so we moved the camp to a better location with a better fire pit. As we were loading up to move the camp, Toyota Crawler pulls up.

Those of us that drink consumed plenty of beer that night at camp, great music, great conversations, classic campfire.

You'll have to wait to hear about what happened on sunday. Just know that sunday proved to be even more carnage filled than saturday!!!

Nice report for Saturday.... I'm looking forward to Sunday's report!

I'll have pics up tonight or tomorrow. :D

Oh, and I must say..... the Desert Mtn area is KILLER! There are endless options, with more than enough stuff for the truly hardcore. I can't wait to go out there again!

Can't wait to see the pics Greg, I had a great time out there with you guys. Special thanks to Spencerai and Toyota Crawlin for providing entertainment and lots of body damage.

Left part of the trip report out. Apoligies to Samizook.

On the first steep (where ferg threw his driveline), samizook gave one heck of an attempt at the steep. He got a bit bouncy, and I thought he might roll it, but he gave it a shot. when he couldn't drive up it, he turned around and backed right up.............

Here's a shot of him in the sami-eating hole.

That is about the best of my saturday photos. I have a number of others, but I only posted what I thought were the coolest. I have two I'll post from sunday, but I'll wait until I write up the report, then I'll post them.

If anyone wants copies of the full resolution photos (1024x768 - perfect for screen backgrounds), PM me your address and I'll mail a cd out to you.

Well, I couldn't resist this one last shot. Saturday night's campsite.

OK, here goes

Sunday
After a late night of beer and good times around the campfire, we got up again with the sun. That is the best time of day. Nice and cool (relatively) and very quiet.

I woke up to find that Bobdog had bailed while everyone was sleeping. He left around 4am or so. I was glad to get a PM from him today when I got back. We were worried about him driving home without any sleep.

Around 8am or so, Terrymac arrived with his sammy in tow, his son and his son's ATV in the truck as well. Everyone got some breakfast, and we talked about the plan for the day. We decided to head over to the quarry to find some obstacles that everyone could try.

People were trying a bit of everything, so I'll have to hit the highlights (read this as carnage). Zach (Greg's roommate seemed to be in the lead, and he tried a line along a seam where a slickrock met with the dirt. It was kind of steep and the dirt out there is very loose. He was spinning up a storm for a few minutes, so other guys (spence, wanker, terrymac) tried a bit of an easier line. The loose dirt got afew of them as well, but in the end, everyone made it out.

I think it was terrymac that first went up the slickrock and over the sandy area, then Toy crawler did a similar line. I tried a slightly different line that I ended up taking a safety strap to cover me while I bumped up a small ledge. A roll in that spot on either side wouldn't have been pretty.

Then comes Spence. he turned around and decided to try this sick line up a very vertical face. He came up it the first time with his p-side rear in a hole and his front d-side came up in the air. It was close, but no roll. He shifted to his left and gave it another shot. Again, it looked like a roll, but he kept at least 3 tires on the rock. Backed off one more time and gave it another shot. It was like slow motion watching his rig start over backwards. He is one lucky dude that he had the 33" spare, cause it caught him and stood him on end. He and James (jamesgeologist as I found out today) were just kicking back enjoying the view while Greg snapped a few photos. Terrymac singlehandedly pushed spence back down on all four and spence decided not to try again.

So, we take off everyone looking for their next line when Toyota crawlin decides to try some sick looking crack. He was doing really well when his d-side rear dropped in the crack and the body damage thus began. He worked it for a while and finally got the rear back up on the side. I decided to take the opportunity to come up through a line I saw that would also put me in position to assist with a strap or my winch. By the time I got past a tougher spot than I anticipated, Toyota Crawlin has moved quite a bit and is using the rock to support the side of his rig. He must have drug his d-side for 8' along that wall. In the meantime, I look up to see huge p-side front air. It was awesome, and he drove the thing out.

He went across some minor obstacles back to the road, then Terrymac came up behind me and we drove out through some cool little articulation spots.

The group went a few different directions while I tried a fun line that gave me lots of air over to the left side of the area we were working. When I got out of there, I found the group watching Toyota Crawlin and Spence jumping their rigs through a little depression. Those guys are nuts. I think Greg was getting some photos of that as well.

We worked our way east, when me, Skinner and Toyota Crawlin decided to take a look at a small ravine. We walked it to see about a way out once we got in, and I started to go up it, but we determined that getting back out would be a pain (without killing a tree or two) that I turned around and headed back out. Thanks to Skinner and JamesGeologist for the spot.

Again, we headed east to catch up with the rest of the crew. Terrymac found a cool wash and had started up it already by the time we caught up to Zach who was having some rear diff/rear axle pinch trouble. Oh for the want of a front locker (he's locked in the rear already). He probably would have walked that obstacle with a front locker. Unfortunately, to get him out, we had to jack his rear, stack a bunch of rocks under both rear tires, then Skinner gave him a tug with a strap and he was out.

To tug him out, Skinner and I both went around the obstacle he was working. I turned around and here comes toyota crawlin up through an obstacle that I saw a few people get a little tippy on. Well, he didn't just get a little tippy, he downright laid it on its side (the p-side this time, so now he has damaged both sides of his cab!!). I think Greg might have gotten a few photos of that as well. We briefly tried to muscle him back upright, but it took a tug from the BlackSheep to get him back upright.

The rest of the crew continued up, so me, Toy Crawlin and Samizook were bringing up the rear. Toy Crawlin let his buddy drive his rig, and he and I stayed back to watch Samizook through the obstacle that got Zach. Here's another guy that was wishing he had a front locker that day. He had to go around cause we just couldn't get the right bump to get his front end up over the obstacle. Each time, the rig would pivot around the rock.

He went around, and I brought up the rear. Travelling up through the wash is fun in the same way that lower helldorado is fun. Lots of articulation and tight turns.

We caught the group as terrymac was attempting to squeeze his zuk between a rock and a hard spot. He took some driver side front rocker damage (not too terrible). My mind is failing me here. I can't remember if he made it through or had to back off and go around. I think we were finally able to get him through though. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Then comes spence. You want to talk about rocker damage. I'm not sure if his door is ever going to fit again. He worked it for all he was worth, and finally made it through.

Toyota Crawlin and muleskinner made that little squeeze look easy, and I didn't really have any trouble with it. However, by the time I got to it, the huge rocks had been moved a bit by the other rigs that came in front of me.

Again, I caught up to the group and walked forward to see spence and the others working a HUGE rock with a highlift. Turns out that as Terrymac got up next to the rock, the rock slipped and started to pinch his tire. Had he tried to go further forward, they were concerned that the rock would come down on him completely. He was able to back out, and they were trying to slip the rock down into a more stable position. The width of Terry's sami was just not quite enough to make it through that obstacle, so he decided to back off and turn around. Toyota crawlin came up and made it look kind of easy. Amazing how different rigs can change your perceptions of an obstacle.

By this time, Samizook had headed back to camp to pack up and head home, and MuleSkinner was a few minutes behind him. Greg had walked further up the wash and reported back that it really got tough, so the whole crew decided to turn around and head back to camp for a lunch break. On the way back, through the squeeze, Terrymac put the same damage on his p-side forward rocker that he put on the d-side earlier!

As I drove back to camp, I knew something was amiss with my rig. My steering wheel was about 90* out of wack from straight. Come to find out I bent my draglink somewhere in the wash!

Once back at camp, It looked like everyone was heading out. Only Terrymac, Spence and I stuck around for an afternoon ride. I took them back over to show them the obstacles we had run on saturday. Terrymac gave the sami-eating hole a shot, but decided that descretion was the better part of valor and backed off it. He did get his rig flexed out pretty well, so I shot a couple of photos of it. I walked them through all the obstacles we did the previous day, then spence took us through a section we didn't do. A quick look at Anarchy alley and we were headed back to pack up.

Terrymac got packed up and headed out, then spence and I got our stuff together. As we exited the camp onto the main road, who did we run into but a buddy of Toyota Crawlin (Ben was supposed to arrive saturday night) and Jeremy with Britney and family in tow.

I was headed out, so Jeremy went back into the campsite. I got to thinking what else have I got to do at home, so I started back. Well, he decided to head out to little moab and try to meet up with a few folks out there. So, I decided to follow him and camp out at little moab sunday night.

There we were, enjoying the bonfire Jeremy's son created (he wanted the astronauts to see it), and who drives by.....None other than Toyota Crawlin....And right behind him, his buddy Ben!

We hung out and burned a bunch of the wood and I headed home this morning.

It was an awesome time and I was happy to see such a great turnout. The potential for desert mountain is just about unlimited with obstacles for every rig from a stocker to a buggy.

Those who didn't come missed out on a great time. Maybe next year we can have another RME campout and trail ride. Perhaps we should dub it "The Official RME Memorial Day Campout and Trailride!!"
