Did I put My Lock-Right in Wrong

I have a 87 4runner turbo automatic. I bought and installed a lock-righ Part # 1620 for my four pinion turbo axle. I followed instructions to a T and I am positive the ring and pinion is spaced just as it was before. Once I got it back together I notice that there was a lot of play when I terned the axles back and forth. I could turn the axle about 10 degrees before it made contact and the drive shaft turned. I can still feel when the ring and pinion conect (once again pretty tight) and I am sure they are spaced correctly. I test drove it at rattlesnake and the locker works like a gem but shifting between D and R creates a bit of a thud.

Is this typical of a Lock-right or do I have a problem?

Typical. The play you feel is the space needed for the locker to ratchet around corners.
