Is that a hole in the side of your block I spy?

Why yes, that is in fact a giant fist sized hole in the side of my block.

3 is dry, with debris all over the surface of the piston. 4 has what looks like coolant, and is filthy to boot, with caked-on muck. I suppose I need to drop the pan and pull the crank in order to get the pistons out, huh?

This is a pretty depressing thread. Sorry your motor took a dump. I've always had really great service through Divinity Auto, so I'm sad to see that your scenario sucked so bad.

I think Ralph is a great guy, and I was happy with him at the time. Since then I've learned a little about motors and prices, and I'm not happy that he advised me to have him rebuild the existing engine (to the tune of near five grand) instead of buying a long block and having him swap it in, which would have been much cheaper. I wasn't happy to find out that some corners had been cut - he reused the timing chain tensioner, water pump, vacuum/radiator hoses, and who knows what else - for what I was charged, I would have thought inexpensive wear parts like those would be replaced as a matter of course. And I became even less pleased when the motor started using oil between changes, but I couldn't point to defective work on his part so I didn't push it. I still can't point to poor work on his part - I suspect if they'd screwed up it wouldn't have lasted even this long. This was probably the result of a defective part that failed early, and it is what it is. At this point, my only real gripe with Divinity is his prices, but I guess that's what happens when 50% of your customers drive a Lexus. :D

I've decided the universe just doesn't want me to have a 22RE. I'm chalking the whole thing up to a learning experience, and surfing Ebay for a JDM motor. :)

Very sad to hear, but $5K!!!! holy sh!t! that could have bought you 3 or 4 new trucks! I have had several complete rebuilds on 22REs with EVERYTHING replaced for well under $1k.

1500 for a supra motor......why not swap in a 5.3 LSx??? Complete ready to run motors can be had for 750

Surely you're not suggesting that I defile my Toyota with Big-3 muscle?

I thought about a Chevy swap. I think a VW turbodiesel would be pimp too. But if I'm not going to stay with the 22 then I really think the 7mge swap is my best bet, in terms of bang for the buck. I have duals on the brain, and I think the Supra motor is the best output that lets me do dual transfer cases cheaply. Pretty much any other motor dictates an expensive transmission/transfer case adapter, and I'm not in a place that I can spend any more on this build than I absolutely have to.

I know the 7M is all the rage, but maybe consider a 2.7L 4cyl from a Taco? I'd think it would fit in there more easily than an I-6, and be an awesome upgrade at the same time.

x3. This is my favorite motor I've ever owned. And with the 4.88s, you'd be able to turn 33-35" tires no problem.

sad news kevin. Good thing you have given an engine swap so much thought before this happened.

Haha, has anybody with a 22RE not given an engine swap lots of thought? :D I'm surprised at how many folks here and elsewhere are pushing for the 3rz. Steve, how much did the adapters for your duals end up running you?

Options I'm considering:
1) 7M swap. I want it. I want it so bad I can taste it. I've wanted it for a year now. Greg telling me it's a tight fit has slightly damped my enthusiasm. I have to be able to work on whatever I choose, and I'm a big guy with big hands, tight engine compartments do not appeal. But it's still a Supra motor. I'm conflicted.
2) 5VZE swap. As much power as the 7M, more torque. OBD-2.
3) 3RZ swap. Less power, better mileage. OBD-2.
4) a built-up 22RE long block from Putneys - http://www.22reperformance.com/22RE Performance - Rebuilt Engines.html - the easiest option, and the least power, but probably enough when paired with a manual trans?

The 7MGE is tight front to back, plenty of room everywhere else. When I dropped mine into my truck, I ended up cutting out my radiator support and building a new one out of tube. It wasn't the best work I've ever done, but it seemed to the the best option at the time.

I know nothing about adapting a 3RZ in place of a 22RE, but it seems like a pretty good candidate.

Can I add one more option, that I personally would love to do into an early Toyota? A Mercedes OM617 turbo diesel! 25 MPG, 180 ft/lbs of torque! It's a simple engine, but still a lot of work to swap. It's a 5 Cyl, so it will be bigger than a 22RE, but smaller than a 7MGE.

Adapter - http://www.4x4labs.com/products/diesel-conversions/om617w56/

It's no powerhouse of an engine, but loads of torque... should work with daily driver duty well.
